I've also decided the time has come to leave the Spectator and go back to indie blogging. My thanks to James Forsyth for inviting me on to the website, and to Pete Hoskin for keeping the technical side of things up to scratch. Thanks also to all those readers who've followed my ramblings. I'm sorry if I missed out on replying to some of your e-mails. I'm going to take a short break, and if all goes well my new blog - which will feature one or two new contributors - should be up and running next week. You'll be able to find it here.

Once again, his mail-bag provides a glimpse into an alternative universe:

The truth is Glenn Beck is a danger to the liberals, socialist and communist group now in power. He and others like O'Reily, Hannity, Linbaugh are exposing and letting people know that Obama and his staff of tax evaders, homosexuals, chicago thugs and criminals want to ruin our country and make America a socialist ,communist country... So bottom line ,thank God for people who will stand up and expose the what the lying Hilter Hussian Obama and his staff of idoits are trying to do to America.
As one of the commenters points out, the real Mr Hilter is still biding his time in the West Country. No wonder, then, that our view of the Arab-Israeli conflict is often so one-sided. Joris Luyendijk's book - a bestseller in his native Holland - is starting to win attention further afield. Simon Kuper, for one, is glad:

“The common idea about correspondents is that they ‘have the story’,” Luyendijk writes, “but the reality is that the news is a conveyor belt in a bread factory. The correspondents stand at the end of the conveyor belt, pretending we’ve baked that white loaf ourselves, while in fact all we’ve done is put it in its wrapping.” ... TV can convey the horror of a suicide bomb but it is less effective at conveying the humiliation of daily life under occupation. In any case, the Palestinians are no good at producing those images for TV.

Israel excels at baking the bread. It knows just how to package a soundbite or image for TV, whereas Palestinian spokesmen drone on in incomprehensible

Polis director Charlie Beckett thinks not:

As Guido himself pointed out, it was mainstream media that was also indulging in this very personal speculation...So by the time Marr got around to putting this bit of gossip to the Prime Minister, it was already up and running. In that sense I think it was a legitimate question. Brown was obviously surprised and upset by the question but he answered it very clearly: ‘No’. In that sense Marr was doing his job, which is partly to allow politicians to categorically kill off untrue allegations...

I am deeply fascinated and concerned about the PM’s character. I think the country is, too. It is an issue. His leadership style is bizarre. It has had a deep effect upon this government’s effectiveness and his Party’s catastrophic decline in the polls. Brown’s reaction to the Marr question and the way he rambled off into what was obviously a heart-felt disquisition on his eyesight ‘handicap’ indicated to me that his health/state of mind is a factor. Lamenting our "deliberate descent into parochialism", the Economist's Charlemagne scans the schools stats:

One column reports on upper secondary students in EU countries who do not study foreign languages at all. This line in the table shows a line of tiny numbers: lots of zeroes, a couple of low percentages (eg, 3.9% of Spanish teenagers learn no foreign languages at school, a blip for Ireland (18.8% without language lessons) and then comes Britain, where more than half of all schoolchildren in upper secondary education (51.4%) learn no foreign languages at all.

This is, of course, the result of a deliberate government policy. In 2003, foreign languages became voluntary for pupils in England and Wales over 14... The British government would also doubtless argue that years of compulsory French lessons left pupils with few practical skills that could serve them on foreign streets. Fair enough. But Britain's unique (in the EU) refusal to study other people's languages still worries me. Learning a foreign language teaches you humility, empathy and respect for others. In Europe, it teaches you the ancient links that unite
