Hillary praised Obama but the damage has not been undone
James Forsyth 5:40am
Hillary Clinton did what her duty compelled to do in terms of supporting Obama and attacking McCain in her speech. But it didn’t inflict lasting damage on McCain; she attacked him on the issues you would expect a Democrat to and praised Obama on the issues you would expect her to. The 3am genie she let out the bottle has not yet been put back in. There is now talk that Bill Clinton will try and do this tomorrow night but given his recent behaviour that’s hardly reassuring news if you are an Obama supporter.
The Democrats have not yet worked out how to attack McCain. The barbs aimed at him are still tentative and the speakers are noticeably more comfortable when they get to bash Bush. The Democrats urgently need to work out what their line on McCain is and ram it home. (Personally, I don’t think the privilege approach is going to work: McCain’s life experience means that that dog won’t hunt) Joe Biden’s speech tomorrow is now crucial. No one has yet landed a stinging blow on McCain so the Vice Presidential nominee must do so if this convention isn’t going to turn into a bust for the Democrats.

I suspect that at some stage the mask will slip and the honed, festering resentment will be horribly evident. The flushed, dyspeptic Bill, his much vaunted priapic charm and charisma waning by the day, clearly detests Obama. He will need all his acting skills if he is to appear other than a florid, cigar-chomping good ol'boy from the Delta unexpectedly asked to laud some uppity neophyte.

This is great news as McCain is the only one that can take on the Russians

August 27th, 2008 11:35am Report this commentI thought she spent an incredibly long time talking about herself, and her experiences of campaigning. She tried to tie all this in with why Obama was the right man, but it didn't work. For me, the speech came off as 'vote for Obama because he's better than McCain, but you missed a golden opportunity with me.'

August 27th, 2008 12:32pm Report this commentHillary Clinton did what her duty compelled her to do...Yes, but everyone must surely guess that her reconciliation heroics are a political necessity for her. If Obama loses on November 4th, she cannot afford to be blamed for splitting the party. That would scupper her chances of the winning role she coverts for herself in 2012. But looking at it logically, here you have someone who spent a great deal of time saying how inexperienced Obama was only to end up standing completely behind him. There are names for people like that.

August 27th, 2008 1:05pm Report this commentHer speech seemed to be mainly about herself. On the few occasions that she mentioned anyone else, her message was essentially:
McCain: Nice guy but bad policies.
Obama: The party has good policies so you might as well vote for whichever bozo the party choose as its candidate.
Mind you, if she'd gushed about how wonderful Obama was and how much she admired him, who would have believed a word of it. What was interesting was switching between the coverage on CNN and the coverage on Fox. I suppose it wasn't surprising to see them pushing a pro or anti Hillary line but then I flicked over to Sky to see Adam Boulton declaring that with one speech Hillary had put an end to the problem of her supporters refusing to vote for Obama in November.

August 27th, 2008 2:42pm Report this commentOh, Joe Biden will deliver a great speech - lifted from someone else.
I am a Clintonite, and I have already refridgerated the champagne that I will crack open on the good night in November when the TV announces: McCain Takes the White House.
Tears will roll down the cruel cheeks of Michelle Obama and the Clintons and I will laugh our heads off.
VOTE McCAIN IN 2008 TO GET HILLARY IN 2012 !!!!

August 27th, 2008 2:45pm Report this commentAustin Barry, Bill's mask will not slip. If it appears to, that is because they think it would suit them and they've scripted and rehearsed it. From so far away, from the point of view of a different culture and different history, it's hard for the British and others to grasp the sheer, smooth, killer professionalism that goes into every breath an American politician takes during a campaign, every blink of an eye.
The Reps have had a tremendous advantage handed to them: Joe Biden. Not only is he incredibly unappealing - what were they thinking? - but he is almost as old as McCain, so the Dems threw away their one advantage - a young(er) man and an outsider.
The wheels are coming off. How amusing to watch just how empty Obama is, and how inappropriate to be President of the United States.
Hillary will be looking for a McCain victory and another run for herself in four years. After four years of McCain, the public will be sick to death of Reps, even if he does a good job - It will have been 12 straight years - and vote Hillary in for eight years.

August 27th, 2008 2:45pm Report this commentThe line about McCain's uncounteable houses hasn't worked.
Heh heh heh !!!!
The sensible Americans don't care how cmany houses you own - provided they were honestly got without the aid of crooks like Tony Rezko.
Besides, one of the houses McCain stayed in most was the Hanoi Hilton.

August 27th, 2008 4:34pm Report this commentGanpat Ram - You make a telling point. Envy politics doesn't work in the United States. They don't, as you say, care how many houses you have, as long as you came by them honestly. In fact, being American, they'd probably be interested in how it was done. Americans, as you rightly imply, simply do not resent the success of others. They take it as encouragement.

August 27th, 2008 11:09pm Report this commentDoes it really matter if Biden does a biting hatchet job on Old John. All the McCain camp need do is carry on putting out that ad with Slimey Joe in the primaries indicating a preference for McCain over Obama.
In fact, does the McCain campaign really need any other ad?

September 8th, 2008 10:16am Report this commentI still think the dems will kick themselves for not letting HRC take on McCain. She could have done it. I don't Think Obama has waht it takes. She probably sold herself in her speech because she still sees herself moving back to the White House. I think she will be good for America. The present two are two extreme poles. I don't think either will be great when if office.
