Brown takes charge in Glenrothes
Peter Hoskin 10:42am
The Daily Record reports that Gordon Brown is to take personal charge of the Labour campaign in the forthcoming Glenrothes by-election, presumably on the basis that he's well acquainted with the area. It's a high risk strategy. Of course, should Labour triumph he'll be able to claim greater credit than would otherwise be the case, and his hand will be strengthened in any Labour leadership struggle. But there's an obvious flip side to that. If Labour are defeated - and that's currently the most likely outcome - then many in the party will hold Brown even more responsible. That he's prepared to take such risks is proabably a measure of how precarious he sees his position as being.

Just do not equate that with taking responsibility - Brown never has.

August 27th, 2008 11:28am Report this commentFrom a purely political viewpoint - this has to be the right move. He is a dead man walking right now and has to make a bold move to shore up his leadership.
However, this story is likely to have been over-spun. In all likelihood Brown will back away, maintain his stance that PMs don't campaign in by-elections and look dithering again.

August 27th, 2008 11:30am Report this commentThis response is pure "Downfall". A "strategic" leader overruling his "generals" to take personal charge of tactical situations because he knows, or thinks he knows, best. I wonder what those "generals" really think about this and which ones will step forward in a September plot?

August 27th, 2008 1:02pm Report this commentIf this is so I cannot think of a more politically inept move. It is blinding confirmation of his compulsive control-freakery, his obsessive micro-management of matters which any sane man would delegate. Hardly surprising therefore that his rumoured plan for economic recovery has not been seen by anyone in Treasury.
But it is this insanity which is causing untold damage to the nation - and, unsurprisingly - to his Party

August 27th, 2008 4:37pm Report this commentWow, taking charge but not visiting the constituency... that will be something.
I am guessing he won't make Hariet Harman PM while he is a full time campaign manager - I suppose he really means that he will second guess the real campaign manager and interfere in detailed decisions.
I wonder what the protocols are for him taking charge from government offices and what costs will be attributed to the campaign expenses?

Micro-management at its best, clearly not able to trust anybodies judgement other than his own. Clearly not listening to anybody,m friend or foe -although he least of all people doesn't know who's who....

November 4th, 2008 4:42pm Report this commentWe have already had the Gordon Brown, lies, made in Scotland, about how he has raised the winter fuel payment to assist pensioners. since May my fuel bill has increased by £35 pounds a month, my winter fuel payment has not increased one penny. But he does not mind bailing out fat cat bankers, that can pay themselves enormous bonuses. A quote from Charles Dickens here, "One man who can't pay,(The Banks) asks another man who cant pay (Gordon Brown), to guarantee that he can pay" or "Annual Income £20, Annual expenditure 19/6p result Happiness". What a lesson he needs to take.
