Gordon's new ad message: I'm not Tony

4:06pm

Back in May, the American pollster (and Spectator contributor) Frank Luntz advised Gordon Brown to make a virtue out of his reputation for being boring. The Prime Minister has today taken this advice. The new Labour logo is to be “Not flash, just Gordon”: precisely the right message. But this message will work best in the immediate aftermath of Blair’s departure while people still think “thank God that grinning charlatan has gone”. In the long run, I suspect they will miss the charisma. So if this has indeed been chosen an election logo, it suggests it will be needed sooner rather than later while the “just Gordon” mantra remains a novelty.

If only there were a Dr. Frankenstein around to attach electrodes to the electorate's temples, the third and fourth words of that strapline might just bring to mind the oft-repeated list of rubbish policies that Brown adopted as Chancellor, and give the Opposition an improved chance.

Advertising doesn't quite work like that... The agency will have pitched a general campaign idea based on a creative brief - this slogan was just part of that theme. It's unlikely (though not impossible) it will ever actually make it into a live execution. But Fraser's right - the campaign message is "Gordon isn't Tony" which works now, but not in 12 months' time when voters will ask "so what is Gordon then?" It suggests a short term campaign requirement. That in turn suggests a spring election, latest...

I doubt a spring election as the news tonight actually rings the following- "Just Gordon Northern on the Rocks"

"In the long run, I suspect they will miss the charisma" / Let's hope we never crave a Prime Minister with charisma. Surely we've been there, done that. / The PM is there to do a job of work, and, to a degree, represent the national character. To me, Mr Brown, with his workmanlike, serious attitude, seems to do this latter bit just fine. / Now if only I liked his policies...

Jimmy, I'm interested - you are the only person ive ever heard, rather than brown, to say "job of work". Is this a Fife phrase or something?
