Not the front pages Gordon would have wanted

James Forsyth 11:31pm

Despite all the courting of small ‘c’ conservatives in the speech, Gordon Brown doesn’t get the front page coverage he would have wanted in two key papers. The Sun’s front pages blares, ‘Not his finest hour’ and takes him to task for not promising a referendum on the EU Constitution/Treaty: The Sun was clearly serious when it promised to keep up the pressure until polling day. While the Daily Mail’s front page is dominated by a story about the McCanns.

Stand by folks for Gordon's masterstroke, and it could come any day now if there really is going to be an Autumn election. What everyone seems to forget is that negotiations on the Constitution details are still going on, so be prepared for Bulldog Brown to announce any day now that red lines have been crossed and the Brown Government can no longer accept the "Treaty" in its revised format. Hey presto, the Sun and Mail love him and he sails to an even bigger victory over Dave the Disaster. Huffing and puffing in Brussels, extension of negotiations announced and lo and behold late this year/early next an "agreement" is reached and Brown Government duly signs on the dotted line. Bit of fuss with Sun, Mail etc but who cares with strategic objective achieved and a 100+ majority, certainly not Gordon. The Constitution and Referendum problem can be politically managed, foot and mouth and now blue tongue can't and there lies his bigger obstacle. If he's confident that the animal disease problem is contained, stand by for Bulldog Brown announcement (white cliffs of Dover as backdrop?)
