Leaky government
Peter Hoskin 10:16am
Expect more furious nail-chewing in Downing Street today, after the leak of a pessimistic memo from Jacqui Smith to Gordon Brown. The picture that the Home Secretary paints, of the effect the economic downturn will have on crime, is a bleak one. Here are some extracts:
"[A downturn] would place significant upward pressure on acquisitive crime (theft, robbery and burglary) and therefore overall crime figures ... [this] might require difficult decisions over officer numbers and priorities."
And
"There is a risk of a downturn increasing the appeal of far right extremism ... which presents a threat as there is evidence that ... experiencing racism is one of the factors that can lead to people becoming terrorists."
Coming just a couple of days after Darling's frank admissions over the economy, it's a tremendous blow for Gordon Brown and his autumn relaunch. There's being realistic about the state of things, and then there's being fatalistic. It may be unfair to claim that Smith's being the latter of these. But the opposition attack dogs will certainly be able to spin it that way.

Hardly insightful.
Why the Home Office is briefing this is more intersting. More money in the PBR?

Yeah, but what makes you think the agenda of GCSE history hasn't been got at by the PC brigade? In fact the people who are thrown out of honest jobs aren't likely to quickly resort to crime. The ones who've always been on benefits (no, not all of them, just the criminals) won't need to rob any more. In fact this is a lefty fantasy, that poverty causes crime. A lot of the EU immigrants will go home if there's no work too. I see no need for anyone who isn't extremist/racist already to turn now. The damage is done.
In fact the whole thing is silly, as it stands. Idon't know what Smith is up to, and I don't care. I say again, no excitement here, storm in a teacup, GB will carry on to the end, with support from Labour MPs who stand to gain literally hundreds of kiloquid at the expense of the nation they are supposed to serve. Bastards. Scum...mutter mutter ,,,,,,.....

September 1st, 2008 1:41pm Report this commentWhat if these leaks and admissions are not a 'tremendous blow for Gordon Brown' at all, but that he is complicit in them. We've all known, whatever else we were told, that the economy is in its worst state for probably 80 years and nothing new in Jackie Smith's report. Have they not sent us a letter to tell us what they could not tell us in person? Basically it's rioting in the streets and a long depression. Stand by for a 'leak' about soup kitchens.

The Credit Crisis has plenty of miles to run - so get rid of your debt, sell your equities, and if you have a second home or a buy-to-let seriously consider cutting your losses - as it is going to get very stormy and many will lose it all....sweet Cassandra.

As for 'far right extremism' there is fat chance of a military junta here. More likely is Nazism, which was the child of the disinherited Left.

September 1st, 2008 3:40pm Report this commentAustin Barry - Well said that man!
Despite the best efforts of the Labour Governmnt, ethnics are still a small minority and they are accorded abnormal - not to say viciously manipulative - amounts of consideration. Minorities who are uncomfortable living among the vast indigenous population should be given £5,000 in exchange for a swab of their DNA and a retinal photograph and put on a transport boat.
Maybe the foul Jacqui Smith could be bundled onto the boat along with them, to spread one-wordler goodwill, gross stupidity and infantile bossiness somewhere else.
The indigenes and the well-settled minorities are all that matter in to our national welfare.
I also agree with Trumpeter. Either Jackie Smith is too stupid to get up in the morning unassisted by carers, or she is speaking of the "minorities". Certainly not the indigenes.
Where is the godawful David Cameron in all thise? Why don't the Tories get rid of this inadequate, over-ambitious nasty piece of work?

September 1st, 2008 7:07pm Report this commentSo we have had years of easy credit for every man and his dog, which has meant good business for all. Now the credit has dried up, that is to say now pay back time has arrived, everyone is stretched out to the hilt and defaulting like there is no tomorrow.
So the share traders have to divert there exploitative dealings elsewhere, hmm, where can they possibly go? FOOD - ENERGY - WATER ETC.
So we will be heading into a time of no hoc, low production, which means EXPENSIVE! After all there are mega profits to maintain regardless.
Sadly though, this will mean desperate times for the bottom feeders. And there is even a limit to how many they can allow to starve to death, after all, no bottom feeders means nobody to exploit and maintain mega profits!
The last time this happened the only way out was to launch a lunatic upon the world in order to create a fresh start. So here we go again. Even with the opening up of China as an outlet for production, things have still gone tits up. Lets face it, capitalism is a boom bust system. I for one have enjoyed the good years, and cannot for the life of me suggest anything else as an alternative. But by Christ when the cycle reaches it's zenith, the renewal process is brutal. I feel sorry for the younger people, I have had a good blast out of it. ENJOY.

I would prefer Labour back for a suicidal encore than a fresh "Conservative" (to give it its formal name) government bubbling with fresh destructive programmes. Frankly, I think you would do better to go down to any Tory Association and choose a name out of a hat and make that person PM. If they're in an Association, at least they're a Tory.

Let's see the evidence, fat chops. I think you're lying again. Although I do not your sleazy saving phrasing: "There is evidence [WHERE?] that experiencing racism is ONE OF the factors that CAN lead to people becoming terrorists." In other words, this sentence is a pile of horseshit.
Why not mention that another factor that MIGHT lead to people of a specific religion becoming terrorists is the call by the imams for conversion of the "infidel" by the sword. In fact, this seems to lead to people becoming terrorists in countries where the races are almost the same, as in India.
That this moron is a government minister in Britain is absolutely shameful.
Why hasn't HM sacked them?
