Have the energy companies damaged Brown's hopes even further?
Peter Hoskin 10:37am
Could the news that the Government won't give cash handouts to those struggling with rising energy bills be another nail in the coffin of Brown's premiership? The spin he's putting on it is that there were never plans to offer "short term gimmicks and giveaways". But the widespread assumption is that the opposite is true, and that the energy companies - rightly fearful of a windfall tax - blocked Brown's designs.
Now the PM's peddling the message that "long term efficiency" is the solution to people's energy problems; i.e. that homes should be made more energy efficient, thereby - in Brown's words - "reducing bills not just temporarily, but permanently". Long term solutions? After all the hype about an "economic recovery package", things are fizzling out even more dramatically than we might have expected.
And there's worse for our Dear Leader. The left of the party is said to be incensed by the announcement, and are minded to cause trouble over it. So far, the Brownites have been keen to plug the narrative that only a small cabal of Blairites are truly discontent with Brown. That impression could be shattered, publically, very soon.

That's really going to help someone struggling to stay warm as the cold weather kicks in over the next few weeks.

IF we're being ripped off by the energy companies, then it's simple - kick the bum of the regulator and MAKE them reduce prices for us ALL.

September 5th, 2008 12:03pm Report this commentTwo giant Brownies here. One is the denial of any plans for short-term gimmicks and giveaways, when that was precisely the "line" emanating from snoozing Southwold throughout this delightful summer. The other is this demented insistence that "energy efficiency" at home will save bills both temporarily and permanently.
Venez encore? Where, Mr. Macbeth, is the money going to come from to replace my draughty back-door, and how exactly does this improve my cashflow overnight? And how can I even attempt it when your ruddy rules and regulations forbid - yes forbid - me to replace single-glazing with single-glazing, so that you can spout yet more tosh about saving the planet?
Never mind fuel poverty - how about alleviating intellectual poverty by strapping on your claymore and buggering off back to your broody bog?

September 5th, 2008 12:14pm Report this commentThe mediocre zanulab MPs' are only interested in keeping their snouts in he trough and are struggling desperately to build up their nest eggs before being consigned to a lifetime on the dole, having to pay their own transport and living costs and losing their taxpayer subsidised pads in London. I don't see them doing anything soon to undermine this

Will he ever admit that this is the truth?

1) Abolish VAT on home heating fuel (electricity, gas, oil).
2) Fund it by canceling the 2012 London Games.

September 5th, 2008 5:06pm Report this commentJust a thought - a question that hopefully someone might be able to answer...
If the economy is in such good shape that we can weather the storm, why do we need an economic recovery package?
I'm sure there must be plenty of Labour/government employees reading this; your answers would be most interesting.

September 5th, 2008 5:22pm Report this commentIt is not just the left that want a windfall tax on the energy companies. Most of the public agree with it, according to a recent poll in The Times. My God even the Right Wing Sarah Palin imposed a windfall tax then gave tax cuts back to the people.
