Bar talk
Fraser Nelson 11:16pm
The ice-breaker at the bars in Bournemouth during the Labour conference was “when will the election be?” Here in Blackpool, the conversation starter is “is it over for Cameron?” But unlike previous Tory mutinies I’ve witnessed, it’s being asked from concern, not malice. No one wants him gone. There’s encouragement at the tougher line he’s adopted in the last few weeks, and no one can name any plausible successor. I've yet to meet anyone who thinks the party has even an outside chance of winning an early election, though.

October 1st, 2007 7:53am Report this commentNo-one has seriously believed that Cameron could lead the Conservatives to a majority in one election; it requires a 9% plus swing from 2005 and in 1997 Blair only achieved an 8.8% one.
Realistically the objective is to reduce Labour to biggest party in a hung parliament or to a very small majority; weakening Brown as he takes his government into a period of tight spending rounds and lower growth.

October 1st, 2007 9:50am Report this commentIt always was a long shot to win in one go, and I even remember talk that despite the probability of losing the next election, Cameron would remain leader for some time. Perhaps he's a victim of his relative success. When Diane Abbott says, from a relaxed position of being a prospective MP in the party of government for five more years, that the Tories would be mad to ditch Cameron, I think she's sincere and correct.

I'm a natural pessimist but the Tories can win an Autumn election.
Remember the May polls and election results?
I know we're not supposed to say we don't want an election now but what the heck.
I say we'll win a General Election with 25-50 seat majority.

October 1st, 2007 10:57am Report this commentI agree with Tiberius. Actually Cameron is the best asset the Conservatives have got - a superb communicator, a fine mind, a dedicated, resiliant and sincere person (don't let any Nulab spin and right wing fantasists tell you different). He's political gold - that was widely recognised when he ran his leadership campaign. OK the hurly burly of political life delivers knocks and these days it's very tough being a Conservative in a nuLab landscape. But don't blame Cameron for that - and remember how much better he has done than any other Tory leader since the 1990s. It's all about morale and facing down an especially virulent and malicious government campaign. Keeping faith and staying loyal to Cameron is key to that.

Oh, I love the fresh smell of irony in the morning!
David Cameron has had the smell of 'loser' following him for three years. No one has confidence in him. No one knows what he stands for in any particular week.
What about the sheer, nasty, unfair nature of the A-list"? What about going to Sweden or somewhere in a parka and posing vacuously with a couple of Huskies? Would Sarah Palin have believed all that controlling, one-worlder BS, or would she have piloted her own jet to Sweden and landed it perfectly? She would have had the snow clothes. Dave bought a ghastly, wimpy little parka for the occasion.
But Governor Palin wouldn't have done it, because she knows bs when she sees it.
This is what Dave has to face: he has no talent.
Plus, he has no followers. No one writes in to newspapers supporting him.

February 11th, 2009 4:41am Report this commentThere is absolutely no hope that Cameron could lose the next election and remain Leader. And he won't win the next election. So. Dog meat.
Maybe he could join the back of the A-list queue.
The man has never put a foot right.
