It is all set up for Dave
Fraser Nelson 2:35pm
For a party facing certain defeat at the next election, these Tories are strikingly upbeat. Osborne's speech has put lead in their pencil, they sense—to use a phrase—that the über modernisers have been slain and the focus now is about lower taxes, Conservative values and none of this "nasty party" stick they have taken from the platform for years. Osborne has teed up conference perfectly for Cameron, on whom everything now rests.

Noting the absolute absence of any further green idiocy could it be that the reaction to the Gummer/Goldsmith report finally brought home to them just how far they had been barking up the wrong tree? Any election won't be won for the Tories though just in the South East and I would think that the £1m IHT threshold, while being a step in the right direction of tax cutting, leaves C2's outside that region entirely unmoved. By and large they don't live in houses nor have accumulated assets anywhere near £300K. The Boltons, Burys, Hyndburns, Keighleys etc are needed but they ain't gonna be won by policies devised for the affluent South East by very rich South Easterners. The regional C2s matter most as Mrs T knew, as Blair knew and Gordon knows now. Pity Dave's other world can't bring itself to encompass them or even address them.

But the answer ain't going out on a limb with a bunch of single-issue fantasists like UKIP. it lies with making the Conservatives appealing to Basildon Man all over again. Find out what he aspires to and enable him to get it. Simple, really. All this green and Europe guff is just irrelevant. And keep Redwood locked up.
