Glenrothes by-election to be on the sixth of November
James Forsyth 11:13amAs expected, the by-election up in Fife is going to be on November 6th—two days after the US presidential election. If Labour lose, then those in the cabinet who know Brown’s limitations will face their moment of decision.

September 24th, 2008 12:23pm Report this commentAn auspicious date for our socialist chums as the Bolsheviks stormed the Winter Palace that day (gregorian calendar)in 1917. I rather suspect though that it will be Comrade Brown who will be consigned to Lenin's "dustbin of history" by the counter-revolutionaries of Fife - which is a pleasing irony.

September 24th, 2008 12:48pm Report this commentIn 2004, with impeachment proceedings hanging over him, it is thought that Clinton gained a number of votes from people who wanted to see what would happen in impeachment proceedings. It made good television.
In the same way, do we think a few good people of Glenrothes might be tempted to vote SNP, just to see what happens? How many votes is this factor worth?

September 24th, 2008 1:01pm Report this commentBrilliant. The US election will still be tingling the media, so nobody will write about Labour's thumping defeat. Amazing really; the people of C&N get a by-election called before their former MP is even in the ground - for political reasons. And the people of Glenrothes have to wait for months - for political reasons.

September 24th, 2008 11:14pm Report this commentI live in the constituency. Labour have been all but invisible. The SNP office is a glowing beacon of dayglo yellow, on the High Street in nearby Markinch (the posh part). Labour have two offices, one on an industrial estate on the edge of Glenrothes and another in the "working class enclave" of Buckhaven, next to a tanning salon. My guess is that they have written off the wider constituency and are focussing on their hitherto-core areas. Trouble is, the SNP are now quite strong there.

The Labour candidate is my old headmaster, by the way! He's a Brown protege through and through- Kirk Elder, Kirkcaldy headmaster - and will not be allowed to utter a word that is not His Master's Voice. Hence his invisibility to date.

October 4th, 2008 8:33am Report this commentLabour have been the masters of their own fate. They have failed to correct so many of the Tory mistakes that the people of Fife (such as me) will vote for the most attractive and energetic, forward-thinking party going - which at this time is the SNP. I've voted for all partys at one time or other but Labour have never been so distant and disconnected from the reality of life in the UK as never before.
