Tory conference: first impressions

Fraser Nelson 2:49pm

Waking into the Tory conference centre here in Birmingham cheers you up immensely. I am a fan of wartime and Soviet propaganda posters, and the Tories have mocked up a bunch of them but with capitalist slogans. "Big government = big problems" says one. Then some of Cameron's top phrases, that there is "such a thing as society; it's not the same thing as the state". The only one which struck me as a little too authentic was one saying Social Responsibility (depicted on a balloon) which sounds one of those weird phrases Soviet governments tried to promote to try and make them mean something. Didn't work then, won't now. My favourite of the Tory crop depicts an oppressing hand with "Labour" on it, its thumb squeezing the words "telling people what to do since 1997". Class.

It's also striking how many lobbyists are here, giving away freebies. The Tories are indulging, having not seen such generosity for a almost two decades. It was hilarious in Manchester last week seeing Labour deserted by the lobbyists, having to buy their own drinks for the first time since 1994.

The stage is stunning. They have forked out for the same mammoth television screen backdrop that Sky News uses. Not even any late accreditation problems. From what little I have seen so far, I'd say it's promising to be the best organised Tory conference I've been to. All we need now are some policies...

I for one will not be impressed with a word Cameron says unless he gives his speech from memory while dancing the Gene Kelly role on the banks of the Seine in 'American in Paris'.

Now is the time to say something REAL Dave. I am working class, one of many, and we are waiting to see some courage and direction. Speak to the nation, to it's soul, and in God's name take the Helm with a firm hand and sail us into the sun.

Labour telling people what to do?

Wait till you guys see what 'nudging' really means :)

All we need now are some policies, eh? How about, for a start, a few teensy, weensie limits on immigration?

That'll be the day......

Nothing like good Socialist Posters. They worked (sadly).

Mind you the image of Cameron doing the Gene Kelly role is quite imaginative!!

Dear dear Verity, where have you been? It has been quite lonely without your incisive comments! strapworld misses you!

Herbert Thornton - Just just limits but reverse immigration procedures put in place and enforced.

Srapworld, hello. I've been over at Melanie's, the socialists' self-serving pow-wow having no appeal ...

MacKenzie, God preserve us from messianic politics and politicians! No wonder folk are cynical- as has been said, they'll promise you earth but can't deliver. Best argument there is for blowing the gaff on the socialist delusion!

..incidentally, that pic of Dave..well, be honest, it reminds me why we need Fraser as Boss instead!

Herbert Thornton, instructive to note that on Marr this morning Dave couldn't bring himself to agree that Britain had done something terrible to itself by allowing Labour's uncontrolled flood of immigrants (several million but no one knows just how many).

Ultra pc Dave does, however, have his ultra pc reputation to protect in his forlorn attempt to ingratiate himself with the likes of Polly and the Today programme.

Now wonder he's such an alien figure for white working class Britain as Rupert so quickly sussed out.

Christ Fraser, you not using Hadrian as your commentary name now are you?

Gene Kelly - American in Paris?? Wouldn't "Singin' in the Rain" be more appropriate. :-)

Chuck Unsworth - I hadn't realised you're gay. Not that it makes any difference, of course.

TGI UKIP - "Herbert Thornton, instructive to note that on Marr this morning Dave couldn't bring himself to agree that Britain had done something terrible to itself by allowing Labour's uncontrolled flood of immigrants (several million but no one knows just how many)."

This is why I would not vote for this individual under any cirumstances. If there were no alternatives, I'd sacrifice my vote rather than support this multi-culti, one-worlder.

He's even more disgusting than Tony Blair, because we have all understood all our lives that Conservatives are for conserving mores, money, standards, our nation, the right to free speech (Dave's a thought fascist), and so on.

Dave's desertion of Conservatives will do him and the Conservative Party in and this next election will finish the party.

I can't wait to see his smug, non-comprehending face swirling down the plughole of history. I now realise how very clever Tony Blair was to pass the baton to Cameron before the multi-culti fuse blew. Blair jumped ship at precisely the right moment, and Dave was so grateful that he commanded a standing ovation in the House of Commons.

Verity,
You're certainly spot on in declaring that Blair 'jumped ship at exactly the right moment.'- though perhaps it'd've been more accurate to say he'd had yet another piece of sheer luck in being pushed overboard at exactly the right moment, allowing his old 'nemesis', Brown to carry all the s**t now hitting the fans! Hell mend both of them.

And I can assure you,Frank P., I ain't Fraser in disguise, just one of the growing band of his admirers and a fellow countryman, not that that makes me biased!
Verity, for all Cameron's cringeworthy traits, anything is preferable to five more years of reckless socialism for the U.K. At least Dave will be surrounded by wiser voices and I suspect ( maybe faint misplaced hope, admitedly?) less inclined to destroy any more of our Constitution and liberties that the deluded utopians intend.Of course secular humanism can be just as rampant on the 'right' as on the 'left' but Labour need sweeping away.

Verity: Blair didn't jump ship. He was forced to give a date to quit after his stance on Israel's intervention in Lebanon.

Frank Pulley - As this was my suggestion for this year's conference speech party trick, meaning he would be giving his speech at the same time, "Singing in The Rain", wouldn't work as the singing would get in the way of the speech. And the dance consists largely of walking, which Cameron was planning to do anyway.

I want the "American in Paris" ballet on the Left Bank or I'm not voting Conservative. That's my final word.

Hadrian and Tiberius, two fine classical gentlemen to be sure, you are right. Blair's eerie luck held out and he was strong-armed out at exactly the right moment for him.
