On the Today programme, George Osborne aspired to the bipartisan talks between Democrats and Republicans. The bipartisanship of the two parties is very telling of the crossroads America is now facing. Both parties had to come together and find some kind of agreement when normally they would have been debating ‘tooth and nail’. And yes, debate did happen, but under the auspices of bigger government. By tradition, the Republican Party stands for small government and free trade. Yet, Bush was endorsing a bill created by the former CEO of private banking institution Goldman Sachs, to give the US government total control of America’s finances. Is this small government, the neo-con way? And it would have rewarded the very big businesses that created this debacle with middle America footing the bill. Is the Republican Party going through an identity crises? The final resolution of Paulson's bailout will be very interesting indeed.
