And in other news...

Matthew d'Ancona 4:29pm

Amid all the justified clamour about the global financial crisis, let us not forget that (for instance) children will still have to be educated. So do read Michael Gove's fine speech on his plans for a Swedish-style schools revolution, expanding on the themes he discussed in Fraser's interview last week. As one Cameroon put it to me: 'We can't let the end of the world distract us from saving the nation'.

But as the blairites point out at the same time as Gove is wooing them - how many people will have the time or inclination to set up their own schools?

We would be better off and more radical offering people vouchers so they can make a real choice for their children rather than the rather unlikely choice of setting up their own school.

Gove still wants to target certain areas and somehow force the best schools to be set up there. Control-freakery. He also proposes forcing good schools to team up with underperforming ones - more controls.

Gove, just get out of the way, why don't you?

Gove himself is on course for greater things than what is regarded as the Cabinet middle rank of Education Secretary.

Rather, the man Cameron openly wants for that job, and who has very clearly already accepted it, is the current Schools Minister.

Give that a moment to sink in.

For the first time, I've watched Dominic Grieve give a speech. I can see why so many regarded him as a good choice as shadow Home Sec.

Good policies all, and it is to be hoped the police embrace his reforms.

Also the culture speeches resonated. Rachel Heyhoe-Flint was as good as ever, and highlighted the shortfall in grants to grass roots sport as a result of Brown helping himself to lottery funds.

And she did speak too soon. Wolves lost 3-0 at home to Reading tonight.

@Lindsay

Adonis has hammered the plan as a waste of money.

Lord Adonis: the plans would cost too many bns. Gove calls for straight talk but it’s time the Tories came clean about the Swedish model. He needs to tell us what he would cut to pay for these 5,000 schools
