Tebbit gets Confucian

Matthew d'Ancona 2:01pm

Splendidly Confucian intervention by Lord Tebbit in the Osborne saga. “He who lies down with dogs shall catch fleas” should earn an instant place in the handbook of political wisdom – although it helps to deliver it in Norman’s quiet, deadly tones of mordant sorrow. You can rely on the Chingford polecat to come up with the goods in a crisis.

So has Tebbit

Lord Austin Barry of Corfu

Buffy, old chap, didn't we indulge in some spiffing horseplay in the Bullingdon Club in the late 50's? Those were the days, eh, before the little Cameroonian oiks were let in. We must get together for a snifter one of these days, put the world to rights, what? Did I tell you about my dalliance with old Widdy.....Whoar, I say, what?

Well, I'm blowed, if it isn't old Oz. Speaking for myself - and for England - I thought the Cameroonians in the 70s rather raised the tone of the old Bullingdon after a fairly fallow time in the 60s. Just as they've raised the tone of the Tory Party after 30 years of oiks being in charge.

By the bye, Austin, is it true your arson of a restaurant inspired the newspaper headline "Corfu: what a scorcher"? Damn fine night out that was.

Tebbit might equally have said: "When you sup with the devil use a long spoon."

How beastly the first two blogees are, seizing onto Mr D'Ancona as would the wolven breed.

Confucian in nature not origin, was I suspect, the sense in which the title was cast.
