Leaderless

James Forsyth 9:14pm

The Times has gone understandably big on its scoop about George Osborne’s activities in Corfu. Many have been taken aback by quite how hostile the tone of its coverage has been—Osborne and The Times editor James Harding were thought to be friends—and if what Guido and several others are hearing is true, it seems that tomorrow’s coverage will be the harshest yet towards Osborne personally. But in all this there is one notable absence: The Times has not yet run a leader on the matter. On Tuesday, one of its editorials did refer to Deripaska but the reference was to his financial difficulties not to the hospitality that he had extended on his yacht. It does seem odd for a newspaper to lead on a story for two days in a row but not think it worthy of an editorial.

Wow, Mandelson does have clout!

How much did it cost to buy it?

Surely there is a story there for the Times, or better still the Tabloids, if they can be bothered looking.

Maybe, Mandelson has become too powerfull for anybody to take on?

Presumably the known sleazebag Mandy will be publishing his version of events tomorrow? Wonderful what lifetime immunity from prosecution can do for you.

Mandleson, Campbell. Whelen. Draper they are all fleas on the back of that dog Lord Tebbit was talking about.

Fleas spreading their own disease..They have to be stamped upon.

Cameron has got to bring back the big ugly beats into his front bench team. Riffkind, Clark, Redwood. to name just three. He has got to accept that this incompetent, Brown, will now go to any lengths to keep power. IT IS A WAR!

Cameron needs fighters not talkers.

You can sense him out there, making his moves, a slow malignancy metastasizing across the body politic. Mandy: the tumour whose time has come.

No-one seems to have mentioned Rupert Murdoch in all this. Apparently he was there (Corfu) at some point in all of this, he owns The Times, he likes to manipulate the players & he is a powerful player. Any ideas..?

Have the media got this wrong? Again.
They have a habit of overegging or misunderstanding the public mood. Osborne's not exactly the darling of the pubic, but Mandy is hated. By definition most people are on whatever side he isn't. The media have been seen to side with him on this. Perhaps that is why The Guardian is trying to take Mandy out of the equation tomorrow. Too late.
The public have rightly seen his fingerprints all over it.
In the long run, Brown would have been better not associating with it.
I honestly think his reply at PMQs wasn't clever, but off the cuff. He would be better keeping his distance.

Funny how ones knows that the Times is a mouthpiece for Mr Brown but the name of the editor is generally unknown!

It's a very frightening thought that no-one dare criticise Mandelson now, for fear of swift and "poisonous" retribution.
PS Don't tell him I said that...

When the dust settles, Mr Cameron, please wave goodbye to little George and bring back Ken Clarke and John Redwood (and maybe David Davis). We need more sluggers and thinkers in the Conservative party than dilettante socialites.

I think you need to follow the money (or lack of it) and ask:
What is the nature of the business relationship between Rupert Murdoch and Oleg Deripaska and has that influenced the coverage in the Times?

I think Osborne has discovered that Mr Harding is less of a friend that he thought as Mr. Harding puts his continued employment and relationship with Rupert ahead of his relationship with George.

Mr Deripaska is, it turns out a very powerful man and not one to upset.

I see the Times is still headlining this matter today albeit with a change of emphasis towards Gordon Brown's making a fool of himself by calling for "the authorities" to look into it.

Still no editorial though, and, who would believe it, not a single reader has written a letter to the editor about it either!

So we should only pay attention to The Times leader? The rest is dross?

Possibly that is so.

Presumably lack of leader is nothing to do with the friendship between Daniel Finkelstein(leader editor) and the boy Osborne?
