Lewis Hamilton, World Champion

Peter Hoskin 9:53pm

Lewis Hamilton, 23, becomes the youngest-ever winner of the Formula One drivers' world championship.  And in dramatic style.  He achieved the fifth place he needed in today's Brazilian Grand Prix only on the very last corner of the race.  Great stuff.

I've always found Formula I incredibly boring. Like Arsenal's title win in '89 I think the highly unlikely statistical setup for the finish added to the drama and I watched the last 45 minutes glued to the TV set. As you say, great stuff.

And he managed to do it despite Gordon Brown wishing him luck. Shows he good he is, I guess...

Why did the person in fifth place that Hamilton overtook slow down?

Funny old game F1. Someone comes fifth in a race and suddenly becomes a national hero. Bernie - can I have a word?

What? No way! A visit to a basement in Earl's Court London with Max is no compensation for losing the Championship!

Well done Lewis, an immensely exciting finish.

And Paula Radcliffe won the New York Marathon.
She has been beaten at the last two Olympics, partly by misfortune, but has bounced back.
A great athlete and a fine ambassador for her sport.

Come, come, Felipe. Coming fifth is the climax to a season when he often came first. Our best driver since Jim Clark and he was a Scot. I think, though I am no expert, that the slowing down is etiquette of some sort (rather than the bribery you surmise).

"Why did the person in fifth place that Hamilton overtook slow down?"

Glock remained on dry tyres despite the rain; the track was by that time too wet for him to obtain any real grip, particularly on the last corner, which is on an incline.
Trulli, his team mate, similarly stayed out on dries, and set a simlar lap time on the last lap.

Re: Felipe. Glock in fifth slowed down because he was on the wrong tyres - slicks - and it started to rain heavily.

Well done to Lewis, like all British sportsman he never makes it easy on our nerves.

could not have written that result! The more I watch it the more genuine it all appears. Can't people back off him now and appreciate a great British champion. And the Switzerland thing! Loads of Brit sports people live in tax havens so why pick on Lewis?

Well, as long as I know it wasn't filth place he achieved, I'll take my defeat, sorry, disappointment with honour.
Forgive me for thinking that Bernie and Max and all the other unsullied paragons of virtue in the F1 game could possibly rig up a scenario that would jazz up next year's competition a bit in Britain. As for the allegations that New Labour were bribed to give them a pass on tobacco advertising I couldn't possibly beieve that that was true, either. It would be unthinkable, thank goodness. Brrrmm. Brrmmm! Whaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrtttt!?
