November 6th, 2008 12:21pm Report this commentIf the commentators are right, it's tighter than this, so it might be worth a punt on Labour.
However, the commentators can then earn more money commenting on how they got it wrong. The bookies will loose real money.
So Labour bounce is over, then.

November 6th, 2008 1:05pm Report this commentThe SNP still have no answered the question as to what they would have done if they had been in power in Independent Scotland when the RBS and BOS almost went bankrupt. Salmond has consistently ducked this question. They would be in the mess Iceland, which he so admired, is in now.

From a post about betting odds you jump to asking a very hypothetical question.
Since Labour seem to be "fighting" this by-election only on matters devolved to the Scottish Parliment (curious since it's a Westminster seat that's up for grabs) they obviously don't share your concern.

Perhaps Salmond would have sought a loan from Russia? Throw in use of the Faslane naval base and pretty good terms might have been obtained from Moscow. Then Washington would have put the squeeze on one G Brown to 'do something'. What would that something be: stop whisky imports? Threaten invasion? But what if Scotland had had its rightful share (according to the SNP orthodoxy) of North Sea oil, would the problem have been so pressing, or would Edinburgh have had the cushion of a sovereign wealth fund like Norway's?
And what if 'Braveheart' had never been made?
And wait, Westminster Scots like Brown, Darling, and Gorbals MIck wouldn't even be there, at least not representing Scots constituencies.
Such is the fun of the myriad scenarios in the 'what if' playbox.

You mention the mess Iceland is in but you make no mention of the revelation by Channel 4 News that Gordon Brown was told about the problems in the Icelandic banking system back in April.
