Betting on the Lib Dems

Fraser Nelson 2:55pm

Ladbrokes today updates its odds for the inevitable Lib Dem leadership race, and - irritatingly for the Tories - Nick Clegg is the clear frontrunner. Some odds:

Nick Clegg 4/5

Chris Huhne 3/1

David Laws 8/1

Ed Davey 10/1

Simon Hughes 12/1

Charles Kennedy 16/1

Alistair Carmichael 16/1

Vincent Cable 16/1

Lembit Opik 16/1

Paddy Ashdown 25/1

Gabriela Irimia 500/1

Of the above, I suspect the Cheeky Girl would do quite well. But it is their funeral....

Irritating? Really? Numbers 3 and 4 on that list look a lot more credible, but I am not sure that the Dems will "benefit" from another change of leader no matter who takes over.

PS - I stand to make money no matter when Ming leaves between now and June.

Ming's not going to go easily, Elspeth still hankers after the status, ministerial car and state functions with the Queen... Could get nasty, so, er a bit like the defenestration of Kennedy

Actually, Clegg is the man the Tories need--to win, they will have to create a mirror image of 1997--where Labour sympathizers voted Lib Dem in areas where the contest was LD versus Tory. That happened because of the similar profiles Blair and Ashdown adopted at that time. Also, Clegg is much more likely to choose to cooperate w/ Cameron in a hung parliament.

Another bet comes in. Just need my 70 to 1 on Cameron to be the only current leader standing come the next GE to come in for a hat trick of political bets.
