The Tories are being outspun
James Forsyth 10:50am
If anyone doubts that the Labour spin machine is once more firing on all cylinders turn to pages 2 and 3 of The Sun today. On page 2, under the headline ‘Hans off PM’s car’, Sun readers are informed that ‘Gordon Brown has snubbed German car maker BMW and insisted his new bomb proof limo is a British Jaguar.’ While on the opposite page, we hear about how ‘X Factor finalists were stunned to receive letters from the Prime Minister praising them for chart-topping charity single Hero.’
These are just small examples of a Labour operation that once more has the bit between its teeth. Just look at how effectively they made their pitifully weak case against Osborne on Saturday, turning Osborne's attack back on him.
The Tories need to fight fire with fire. There is still an extent to which they immediately go on the defensive when attacked rather than hitting back harder. The Tories must have the confidence to stay on the offensive if they are not to be permanently on the defensive.

TO be fair, they appear to be receiving ample assistance from the BBC, which seems desperate to tear down the Tories.

November 17th, 2008 11:27am Report this commentThe tories political strategy looks precariously out of date. Nice, young, offending noone is not now unpopular, its just it doesnt resonate with what people are now worried about.
Effectively the last 3 years of political strategy are now moribund and the party needs to start it again.
The upside to this is the fundamentals favour opposition over government very heavily. So if Cameron is prepared to be ruthless and take the plunge, the opportunity for a landlside victory is there.
Effectively this debate over osborne is really a debate over whether he makes this major shift in political strategy or not.

Cameron should use little things like this to mock Brown. It's like your dad trying to be cool with your friends when you were a teenager.

November 17th, 2008 11:57am Report this commentNever mind the X-factor. Today a report on presumed consent for organ donation came out against it, having taken the evidence, considered the matter properly etc and what does Brown do? Announce that he's going to ignore the report and introduce the law anyway. I suppose he thinks that having the nationalised the banks, nationalising our bodies is the logical next step. Never mind early elections: at this rate we won't be having elections at all since Brown so clearly thinks he knows better than anyone else on everything.
God, how I despise this Government..........

November 17th, 2008 12:00pm Report this commentPerhaps whilst our prime minister is penning fan mail to X-Factor stars he might care to scribble the odd note of personal condolence to the families of dead servicemen in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Or would that unduly distract him from saving the world's financial systems?

November 17th, 2008 12:16pm Report this commentHere's what I wrote at EuRef, it works here too.
This lot seem to think their turn in the trough is coming, and they don't have to do anything to deserve it. And doing nothing is what they are best at. What we need to see is a bit more passion and a bit less apologising for being right-wing. They cannot get away with a claim to be elected because they are going to do Labour things but more effectively. They need to look at what's wrong with modern Britain and its place in the world from first principles (OK, I see a flaw in my argument, but can't they pretend to have them?).
If they can see a broken society, then they should get angry about it. They should tie it to the wet policies (from both sides) which brought us to this pass. They should give this govt no quarter, 11 years is time to fix anything if you want to fix it. They should stop being polite. Don't accept BBC bias. Don't accept speaker bias in the house. Don't accept non-answers from the govt at PMQs, hold them to their duties. Have policies that are opposed to current Labour policies. No more me-too. And play every day like the election is in three weeks.

November 17th, 2008 12:20pm Report this commentthe next bit of spin will be when brown calls an election for next spring.
he will point the finger of blame for the further economic downturn on the rest of the world not following his plan and then spin a massive line that it is important that the people of britain vote labour to provide a consistent approach to get us out of the problem.
he will say that we have started down the road with is rescue package and that any change resulting from tory plans being implemented would derail his glorious march towards recovery.

November 17th, 2008 12:45pm Report this commentI have the impression that David Cameron and George Osborne are just too well mannered, polite and honest to mix it with the pork pie merchants, spinmasters and hypocrites that they are up against.
All eyes are of course on the economy at the moment, but God knows there is so much else for the opposition to attack, the snooping, the micromanaging, the contemptuous squandering of our tax money, the outright lies of the Lisbon constitreaty, the list is virtually endless. Come the election the electorate need to be reminded of all this in no uncertain terms. It is not just about the economy, it is also about having an honest, competant government that is on the side of the people - not at war with them.

Lucky Gordon Brown!
In the last week, three soldiers died in Afghanistan when their *vehicles* hit a road mine.
Its a bloody shame that they obviously didn't have a *bomb* proof vehicle to travel in.
And while some in the media might brag that the government spin machine is firing on all cylinders, I suggest that our journalists are getting so lazy that all they do is type up the line given to them.
Do they even bother to look at all the stories out there this week, never mind connect up the dots!
Pretty sick IMHO for Brown to be bragging about his new British made car at the same time.
So, no, I don't think that the No10 press machine is firing on all cylinders.
But then, neither is the media, so lucky Brown&Co!

November 17th, 2008 4:26pm Report this commentThe alternative to Jaguar is also Indian owned.
At least at the moment both are still built in Britain.
But if this is an example of spin it is a pretty poor one.
Thanks to Labour the only pother British alternative had its production line shipped to China.
Most governments use a home grown car for their big wigs so Britain doing the same is no great piece of spin.
Having said that I wonder what Italy's PM/President go round in since FIAT do not make big cars.

They speak as though they are in a debating society, they structure their terminology which makes sense to their peers, but leaves everybody else cold.
If they want to win my vote they need to answer this Dickensian paraphrase:
