November 24th, 2008 7:24pm Report this commentI thought Osborne did rather well. He emphasised just how huge our debt/borrowing is and this seems to be the overriding theme from today (Andrew Neil, Nick Robinson, that Peston guy and various number-crunchers all pondered this this afternoon as much as the finicky details of Darling's proposals.)
Darling's speech inevitably rambled on with this number, that percentage, this saving, that cost until they all became a blur. Osborne made a punchy use of big numbers and the gravity of such big numbers. It hit home.
Furthermore, Tom Brady on ITV news made a few cogent points that painted the government in bad light (...how come certain other countries started paying off debt some time ago 'cos they saw the excrement heading for the fan; why didn't Bungle-bear Brown? was the essence of it). There seems to be a collective sucking in of breath now as people and commentators grasp the massive scale of debt/borrowing Hash Brown has saddled us with.
Is the Great Helmsman's recession- boost bubble about to deflate?

November 24th, 2008 9:47pm Report this commentThis is all about restoring his reputation with the party. Feels badly out of step with public, but that probably doesnt matter too much at this stage.
