Mumbai crisis: hostage update
Peter Hoskin 9:21amThe BBC are reporting that the hostages in Mumbai's Taj Mahal Palace hotel have now been rescued. There are still thought to be hostages in the Oberoi Trident hotel. We can only hope that this situation resolves itself without further loss of innocent life.
UPDATE: The BBC are now reporting the situation at the Taj as "uncertain" - although a number of hostages have been freed.

November 27th, 2008 2:24pm Report this commentIt's Bombay not Mumbai, we are not in India!
I presume you don’t call Germany Deutschland, so why call Bombay by its Indian rather than its English name?
Verity
November 27th, 2008 3:13pm Report this commentQuite, Nick Kaplan. And the Indians call it Bombay, too. The Government of India refers to Mumbai, but everyone else says Bombay.
YRR - what an odd phrase: "Unfortunately the small Jewish center in the city has been attacked ...". Unfortunately? Also, why is it more "unfortunate" than that dozens of other Indians have died?

November 27th, 2008 4:20pm Report this commentVerity please don't jump down my throat about an unfortunate use of the word unfortunately... Obviously no one intimated that this particular facet of the on going tragedy is any different than all others... I mentioned it because till this morning no mention of the jewish center had been made.... It is now being covered on the major media.... all terror is a desecration of mankind, for all humans are created in G-ds Image

November 27th, 2008 5:33pm Report this commentNick Kaplan, I've never heard anyone outside an embassy or a consulate refer to Mumbai, although The Times of India uses the official new name. So doubtless, it will eventually develop legs. Which is a shame. Who would order a Mumbai gin?
Very sad news: Former Indian PM - the man who dethroned the toxic Congress Party and led India to its current levels of aspiration, creativeness and prosperity - has died of blood cancer in Delhi. RIP.

November 27th, 2008 7:42pm Report this commentUPDATE: The BBC report that this has been carried out by 'gunmen'.
From this we can deduce that there are men involved - and they have guns. Who knows where they've come from though, and what motivates them to such acts?
And if it's Mumbai, why is it not Mollywood?

November 28th, 2008 5:21pm Report this commentWell, well, well ... "up to seven" of the Bombay terrorist shits are from areas around Leeds and Bradford. Fortunately, they were caught in India, rather than Britain, so will receive excellent punishment.
Any politician who promised a programme of mass reverse immigration would be swept into office on a landslide.
