The Star of the East will always shine brighter than this ideology of hate

James Forsyth 4:32pm

Suketu Mehta’s book about Bombay, Maximum City, has been much quoted in recent days. It is, as Matt says, the best book about this astonishingly complex city.Today, Mehta has an important piece about how best to defeat the fanatics who attacked it in today’s New York Times.

"The terrorists’ message was clear: Stay away from Mumbai or you will get killed. Cricket matches with visiting English and Australian teams have been shelved. Japanese and Western companies have closed their Mumbai offices and prohibited their employees from visiting the city. Tour groups are canceling long-planned trips.

But the best answer to the terrorists is to dream bigger, make even more money, and visit Mumbai more than ever. Dream of making a good home for all Mumbaikars, not just the denizens of $500-a-night hotel rooms. Dream not just of Bollywood stars like Aishwarya Rai or Shah Rukh Khan, but of clean running water, humane mass transit, better toilets, a responsive government. Make a killing not in God’s name but in the stock market, and then turn up the forbidden music and dance; work hard and party harder.

If the rest of the world wants to help, it should run toward the explosion. It should fly to Mumbai, and spend money. Where else are you going to be safe? New York? London? Madrid?

So I’m booking flights to Mumbai. I’m going to go get a beer at the Leopold, stroll over to the Taj for samosas at the Sea Lounge, and watch a Bollywood movie at the Metro. Stimulus doesn’t have to be just economic."

Do read the whole thing.

How many dead in Mumbai? How many dead in London from any one terrorist incident?
You go to Mumbai and show how brave you are. I'll stay here in safety, thanks.

The silence from the Muslim "community leaders" here in the UK on this carnage speaks deafening volumes.

Whoaaahh! There's a real anti-Islam slugfest going on in the Readers' Comments under Charles Moore's wimpy article in today's Telegraph! http://tinyurl.com/6zllw5

My problem with India is that they have legions of poor, at the same time as having an international airline, a space programme, the most new millionaires, as well as receiving shedloads of (our) foreign aid!
Does anyone else have a problem with this equation?

Is it really true that SEVEN of the twenty-odd terrorists came from here? Or is it just a rumour? And is it also true that the most dangerous terrorist we can find here is Damian Al-Green, peace be upon him?

Go to Mumbai ? No, I don't think so. I avoid London and public transport after 7/7. Better to be safe than sorry.

Really - so the more we act as willing victims, the sooner Muslims will tire of murdering Infidels?

Tell us another one.

I'd love to join in with the defiance of your title, but wherever it is this Star of the East, its beams have just been dimmed somewhat.

Our 'gunmen' of indeterminate origin - how does it go? - "will eclipse and cloud them with a wink"
