One meeting Peter Mandelson isn't invited to
James Forsyth 11:39am
Westminster is in awe of Peter Mandelson’s power. There is no doubt that he has almost unparalleled access and a remarkably wide-ranging remit; as Rachel Sylvester noted he sits on 33 of 39 cabinet committees. But it seems there are still some Brownites who are not yet ready to welcome him into the inner circle. Kevin Maguire, no friend of Mandelson, reports in his New Statesman diary that:
When the election comes, and to be fair it is the Tories who are stoking the speculation the most at the moment, it’ll be a fascinating to see if Brown can get Mandelson and team of hard-core Brownites to work together. One wonders if it won’t be like the Clinton campaign with the different factions briefing against each other at the first sign of trouble.“The great guessing game over the date of the election has overlooked a regular gathering in No 10 on Wednesday afternoons. Chaired by Gordon Brown's mini-me, Ed Balls, the eclectic collective includes Miss Moneypenny Sue Nye, the spinner Damian McBride, the union money man Charlie Whelan, Colin Byrne (corporate link), the fixer Tom Watson and Labour's generalissimo Ray Collins, plus an assortment of other influential figures. What could they be discussing?”

December 18th, 2008 12:15pm Report this commentDon't be daft. The election is for 3 weeks not 11 months in the case of US primaries.
What you do not seem to get is the way labour hate the tories and are willing to even see the country into queer street to win the next election.
There will be no Clinton like rifts.
There is no need when tories like you are so dumb and nit pick the opposition at every opportunity.
Lord Rio and McGoebbels and Mini-me are kacking themselves at your expense even as we speak.
Good thing labour are only on 33% in the polls.

December 18th, 2008 12:19pm Report this commentIt is pretty obvious that the election will coincide with the return of troops from Iraq. Despite what you say about the war, Blair still won in 2005 due to the fact that he still held enough of London and the South. A lot of people in those areas respected him for the decision he made.
I do not think Brown has anywhere near the same level of respect in Southern England.
I cannot see Brown ever winning an election.

December 18th, 2008 1:20pm Report this commentHe has not been invited to any of the regular meetings of the Bullington Club, either! But I do not know why.
But, there again, he is a member of the Corfu Yacht Club.
You can attend too many meetings, dont you know!

December 18th, 2008 2:09pm Report this commentRegarding meetings Mr. Mandelson isn't invited to. Given Mr. Mandelson's links to Mr. Deripaska and the alleged links between the russian aluminium oligarchs and the FSB. I wonder if Mr. Mandelson has completed his Developed Vetting? As Business Secretary he will clearly handle classified economic intelligence? I wonder what the views on this are in Thames House and Vauxhall Cross?

December 18th, 2008 2:31pm Report this commentI think that Brown is looking for any glimmer of economic hope, even if it is illusory, so that he can vainly claim immense economic competence. He must really despise Blair for lingering so long and thus allowing the 'economic miracle' that he achieved to unravel before his eyes. The vanity of this man, and the Labour sycophants that have attempted to sell the fantasy of this government being fiscally responsible and competent, have lost what they felt was their free ticket to having another term in government. Let us hope that the public is not so stupid to believe that Brown did anything more than borrow, tax and regulate in the most benign economic cycle for decades, and drove us into a deep recession and increased public debt to ridiculous levels. You can at least say that New Labour is still Labour through and through--tax, spend, and regulate !

December 18th, 2008 5:09pm Report this commentThere won't be an election. Brown might think of holding one in June when the troops come home from Iraq but he'll bottle it again because the economy will be in an even more crappy state than now. More likely he'll hang on to the last minute in 2010, and then declare a state of emergency (economy hasn't yet recovered), and cancel all elections.
