It was forty years ago today...

9:58am

Sergeant Pepper always cheers me up because – aside from its musical brilliance – it is slightly older than I am. Today’s papers are full of readable celebrations of the album’s anniversary, including a Guardian leader and a “where is she now?” piece in The Times on the Lucy of “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds”. My favourite track, by a whisker, is still “She’s Leaving Home”. What do other Coffee Housers think?

With a Little Help from My Friends is surely the track for the Cameron era - trusting people and sharing responsibility

It strikes me as a very uneven album, some great stuff and some quite appalling McCartney pub songs like 64, Mr Kite. The Stones released Satanic Majesties the same year.... no contest.

gotta be 'a day in the life' Matt. I still have a rare mono version. On the whole a classsic album which still stands up today.

Music is always subjective obviously, but Sgt Pepper was another example of how the Beatles continually led music, how their style changed and experimented. You have to stand in awe of how much of their output was so spectacular, so well known; accessible. Despite it's simplicity and words that at times struggle, surely the title track is best, particularly when you add the reprise. Sing on Billy Shears.
