Brown smiles for the camera

Peter Hoskin 10:59am

Optimism, optimism, optimism.  That's the line that Gordon Brown pushes in his interview with the Observer today.  He quotes Barack Obama; says he's going to create jobs the Roosevelt way; claims that British goods are "the products the world will want to buy"; and seems dismissive of any black clouds on the horizon, as in this (quite worrying) passage:

"[Brown] mocks the Observer for being too pessimistic in our questions: 'Can we afford this, can we afford that'! I'm more optimistic about our ability to be a successful economy creating large amounts of wealth in the future.'"

The politics of all this optimism is fairly clear.  As Matt suggests in his Sunday Telegraph column today, Brown's current status as a "wartime" Prime Minister doesn't guarantee him electoral success once the "war" is over.  The race is now on between Brown and Cameron to appear the best to lead us through the post-recessionary landscape.  At the moment, polling suggests that the Tory leader's ahead on that front - which is why you can expect plenty of messages of hope, and much smiling, from Brown in 2009.  I also wouldn't be too surprised if the Government starts more frequently branding opposition attacks as "pessimistic".  The question is whether all that will wash once unemployment, bankruptcies and repossessions start shooting skywards.

He made a snide comment that the opposition enjoyed the crisis, when being interviewed by Andrew Marr, this morning.

Smiling. but sticking to the carefully prepared script. He looked ill at ease, though.

If our Prime Minister put half as much effort into serving the country as he does into serving his own self-interest, then I'd guess that the British people might be able to feel a little more optimistic themselves.

He looked far too pleased with himself for keeping secret his intentions about the date of the election.

Otherwise he stuck to his line: the clunking ham fist of Goebbels Brown will see the nation through this global crisis which is all the fault of American banks. Brown`s measures will achieve little - mere farts in the thunderstorm and about as helpful.

I put more faith in the invisible hand of that other, more illustrious, Kircaldy resident Adam "Wealth of Nations" Smith. Provided of course that the nation can be freed from the binding of tax and red tape that inhibits the enterprise spirit on which we all depend.

What 'British Goods' does he have in mind? Do the 'Britons' actually make anything at all?

Er I know that Brown gets bored easily and loves to have a new crisis every week but aren't we getting a bit ahead of ourselves?

The worst of the recession by most accounts is still ahead and Brown is trying to move the agenda on. For God's sake get get his head out of those delusional neverneverland clouds and drag him back to reality.

Real people are going to have their lives ruined and Brown is to blame. Don't let him off just because he wants to run away from his complete failure!

Deluded, demented and following a script prepared by the fairies at the bottom of the garden.

How much more of this lying nonsense do we have to put up with?

Has dunderhead only just reached the 'denial' phase?

Perhaps he realises how bad 2009/10 is going to be and that, even after all his screw ups, he is still in with a chance to win the GE.

Even Brown realises that when the recession is done and people start focussing on personality again he is finished. Cameron for all his faults is a likeable chap, and Brown is not.

Even if there is no light at the end of the tunnel by the GE, the personality factor could work for Cameron like it did for Obama in the US. Theres hope yet for the tories!

Elf - V good! Your comment was like an Alka Seltzer and took away the nausea I got when I saw that photo of him smiling.

BTW, to what "British goods" does he refer? Does know not realise that the world has moved way on since his days at uni and most countries are engaged in manufacturing. He's such a liar. He appears to think that Britain still features large in the minds of the people in other countries.

"Smiling makes him look psychopathic. It's not a good look."

Looks psychopathic? As Hamlet said - I paraphrase of course - to his Mum - Not seems! Is!!

Biographies of The Saviour indicate that he has all the symptoms of a sociopathic personality disorder. To me, it was the descriptions of the disorder, the shambolic mess of his domestic arrangements, the crib notes carried about in Tesco bags, the belongings strewn all over the scene that clinched it. Few sociopaths are in fact highly organised and efficient in the absurd Hollywood Hannibal Lecter style. Most are detached from reality and lead messy, disjointed lives and b*gger everything up. Which is of course why they always get caught. I think The Saviour knows he's soon going to get collared, be it by a rebelllion of the talking vegetables in the cabinet or by the voters.

Brown is a clown. Rhetoric instead of action. Promises that are never fulfilled. Words, words, words from Humpty Dumpty, the man who says that words means what he wants them to mean. The man from the manse is out of ideas and nearly out of time. This is an amoral government who will say and do anything in a desparate attempt to stay in power.
