Lib Dem MEP: Israeli government fundamentally racist
Fraser Nelson 5:16pm
With neither Labour nor the Tories saying much about Israel, Nick Clegg spotted an opportunity in venting outrage today. His party love it - but a little too much. Here is an extract from the blog of Chris Davies, a Libdem MEP:
Clegg may regret opening this Pandora's Box. LibDems tend not to have sensible things to say on foreign affairs, as Davies demonstrates. Clegg would be advised to read that Tory memo leaked to Newsnight, and implement his own version smartish."It is time for Liberal Democrats to call a halt to the attempt to ride two horses and to try not to upset the Israeli lobby. Our support for the Palestinian cause is well enough known amongst those (by no means all!) in the Jewish community in the Jewish community who will not countenance criticism of Israel. It is not well enough known amongst the majority who are appalled by Israel´s behaviour. We should make clear that we will campaign tooth and nail for a viable and independent Palestinian state and will demand an end to deals with an Israeli government that bases its policy approach on a stance that is fundamentally racist."

January 7th, 2009 6:03pm Report this commentIt's time for the Conservatives to say something about justice for the Palestinian people instead of being always supportive of Israel. Especially at this time, people are talking about the actions of the Israeli government and army and expressing a vague equivalance of Palestinian and Israeli violence does the Conservatives no good. Yes, of course Palestinians must stop firing rockets but that is not the cause of the conflict - basic injustice over half a century is the cause of the conflict, and the lack of a Conservative voice about such injustice is shameful.

January 7th, 2009 6:05pm Report this commentThey can campaign tooth and nail all they like to secure a Palestinian State, but as long as there is an entity named Israel adjacent to their land, such efforts will be in vain.
If the 'racist' label is being brought in to things, it might fairly be attributed to the events of not too long ago, which saw the forced removal of people from Gaza on no other ground than that they were Jews. Mr Clegg would not consider that worth his comment.

January 7th, 2009 6:08pm Report this commentLibDems are unstable and it is worth letting the electorate see that. They have had leaders capable of giving credibility to a party which is really a "movement" akin to Continental political party but they do not have one now.
The LibDems are not a political party but a rallying point for the oddball tendency

January 7th, 2009 6:21pm Report this commentWhen will this Party of nitwits realise that Hamas has no intention of sticking to a permanent ceasefire. In their own words, "There will be no talks about a permanent ceasefire as long as there is an Israeli occupation." But there is no Israeli occupation! As the whole Muslim brotherhood desires the destuction of the state of Israel, Hamas, and other terrorist groups, are only fronts and not reliable negotiating parties to a lasting peace. Furthermore, what, I wonder, would Clegg and his party say if the Chinese made Fajr rockets, supplied by Iran to Hamas, and which no doubt Hamas are holding back as a reserve of last resort, are fired at Israel's nuclear power station at Dimona, a site well within the range of these rockets?
Its utterly ridiculous for a major British political party to take the side of such terrorists. Someone please bang their heads together and make them see sense.

Clegg needs desperately to be heard and as for the Tories, well no doubt The Shaven Headed One is counselling Dave to wear a tea towel on his head "to show how they've changed" and Hague is away somewhere writing his jokes or books (biography of Arafat?)

January 7th, 2009 7:27pm Report this commentThe despicable thing about Davies's comments is his cynical attitude towards Jews in this country (his last paragraph. He appears to be saying that the Jews can get stuffed, there are no votes from them so we can say what we want about them. With the shocking rise in antisemitism here, how long before a Liberal Democrat/Green politician calls for actual steps to be taken against Jews?

January 7th, 2009 11:22pm Report this commentThe Right Honourable Gentleman, perhaps this is actually because the majority of MP's who arent blighted by a hatred of Israel actually understand that Hamas has got the war its been wanting and working towards for years.
The very fact politicians arent clammering for the muslim vote on this matter should be a pretty good indicator of who they think the real victims are (hint, it aint Hamas).

Can we settle this easy bashing of the Tories and find out what you really want. Nick Griffin for Foreign Secretary perhaps? Advising the Prime Minister Nigel Farage with Robert Kilroy-Silk as a tough talking Home Secretary?

January 8th, 2009 10:06am Report this commentLiverpool Tory, there you go again with your easy, sleazy BBC/Labour/Tory trick of trying to twin UKIP and the BNP
As I seemingly must unceasingly point out on this blogsite, Nick Griffin's BNP are a left wing party, while UKIP is a right of centre conservative party.
As for what I want - simple, a well led, vigorous, fierce and determined opposition leading to a conservative government. Specifically what I do not want is a continuation of social democracy under the Cameron Tory brand.
And if your shambolic, unprofessional, undisciplined, part time "opposition" with its lame and limp leadership wasn't so pathetic it wouldn't be so easy for me or Gordon & Co to keep bashing them.

January 8th, 2009 12:11pm Report this commentTo say that the Lib Dems have nothing to useful to say on foreign policy is complete tripe. The party led the way on Bosnia, Kosovo, Afghanistan, Iraq, the Israeli incursion in Lebanon, and now Gaza when the two "bigger" parties sat on their hands, and offered little that was constructive. Just because you disagree with a statement made by one Lib Dem politician (Chris Davies), does not mean that the entire party has nothing of use to say.
@ Augustus - Read Clegg's article in the Guardian. If you do, you will see that he condemns Hamas' agression, and calls for the EU to resinstate it's mission on the Egyptian border to stop the flow of illegal weapons into Palestinian Territory. He's not solely condemning one side, and wants both sides to feel secure, as it is the only path to peace. There does come a point, however, with the overly-aggressive response that Israel has unleashed on Gaza when you have to say stop. This is what he's doing.

Hamas call for the end of Israel and many call for the death of Jews.
Call me hard hearted but the Palestinians sound like perpetual losers, act like them .. and get treated like them.
Not to say I support Jewish treatment of the Palestinians.. far from it. But Palestinians ask for what they get.
A plague on both.
As for Clegg, once an idiot, still an idiot

January 8th, 2009 1:40pm Report this commentJamie S, I can only conclude that someone who writes: "Of course, Israel has a right to defend itself" in an article headed: "We must stop arming Israel", is not able to digest exactly what Israel is up against, and has been up against for sixty odd years. If any country on earth needed the West's complete backing it surely must be Israel above all others.
