Is it the schooling or the eyebrows that is the problem?

James Forsyth 7:27pm

One friend joked to me the other day that Prime Ministers should only appoint Chancellors whose eyebrows match their hair colour, pointing out that the last two Chancellors to lead Britain into recession have both had black eyebrows and silver hair. But Alex Massie points out that it might be the schooling not the eyebrows that are at fault: both Norman Lamont and Alistair Darling are products of Lorreto, the prestigious Edinburgh boarding school.

Is this some sort of secret society which emanates from Loretto?

At my school there were various clubs - those caught smoking and subsequently severely punished used to burn a hole in the tip of their ties with a cigarette. But at least that badge of honour was not permanently on display. Eyebrows are. No, I tend to think it's more likely to be genetics or, just possibly, vanity.

Slightly unfair, I think.

Both Lamont and Darling largely inherited their problems (Lamont never wanted to be in the ERM, for example), yet have received much of the blame.

Perhaps the difference is that Lamont made some useful reforms that benefitted us in later years. Thereisn't much sign f that from Darling yet.

Chuck - maybe the whitened eyebrows are the result of an illegal half-smoked ciggie being stashed still alight in the breast pocket of a school jacket?

Loretto boys wear shorts at all times, or at lest they did. Scots hairylegs on show in all weathers. And let me tell you it's bloody cold in Musselburgh. That must have an unfortunate effect upon them, don't you think? Hair shirts and all that.
