The Glasgow airport attack (updated)

7:14pm

Were they Scottish? The response to the failed Glasgow airport attack will be dictated by the identity of the perpetrators. Early reports say Asian men were seen leaving the car, and Glasgow certainly has a large Asian community - more akin to that that of Bradford than London, ie, poorer and perhaps more susceptible to Al Qaeda's message.

This attack makes it harder for those who blame Blair and the Iraq war for making England the target of attacks. Scotland is run by a nationalist government and its first minister Alex Salmond was vehemently against the Iraq war. And still the jihadis target Glasgow airport.  Further macabre proof that the terrorists’ only guiding principle is that of psychotic bloodlust.

MI5 opened a bureau in Glasgow recently, which surprised me at the time. But its ten years since I left the city. It seems the jihadi menace is more widespread than we had feared.

Brown's public face on the weekend's terrorist plots seems at least competent, I have to say. But, Fraser, if I can just pick up on your "Spectator" column on Brown this week: it was chilling! And, like many, you seem to indicate he has an almost divine ability to direct the future. If your observations (are they fears or expectations?) all came about, Brown would have demonstrated insight almost beyond human capability. If there was one thing the Tories underestimated, it was surely the Hollywood TV coverage Brown received. But what could they have done to scupper it? Cameron's reflexive critics are salivating at the moment -I just hope the Parliamentary Party hold their nerve until normality returns (which it must), when a considered analysis can be taken on how the Brown/Cameron battle will be played out in the arena that actaually permeates the electorate.

I think we've all learned by now that it is not poverty that leads to terrorism. So far, all of the British Jihadists have been educated and affluent.

Brown ( whose real name is Flash) managed to bore everyone with his statement which began " I've just come from a meeting of COBRA .." instant snooze mode. He has now disappeared from our screens, thankfully, to be replaced by Alex Salmond, who, with one twitch of his mouth, got more attention than Flash's entire statement

when do you think the nutters struck the match? Why are we so worked up about a couple of failed attempts. I spend years in Ulster - this sort of incident would have had a road closed for 4 hrs then re-opened - whats wrong with people. And why is this mad terrorist being treated at the NHS expense. If he wanted to die let him

Ah how divine the terrorist attack and yet more so one without casualties (the terrorists themselves don't count). How I can be noted for my calm response Brown will purr, how I can push more illiberal laws aimed only at the law abiding. Yet preachers of hate are welcome here, terrorists will be treated with respect and dignity and helped to claim compensation for any minor slight (though don't suggest you wont pay your council tax -a society cannot be undermined like that!) Labour invited the terrorists both through weakness and the attack on Iraq. Listen to what Labour say on these incidents and then think what they don't say. Who chairs COBRA? Smith claimed she did the first one but Brown has subsequently talked of chairing it's meetings; couldn't she cope? Why do they keep talking about the sterling job each other is doing and constantly praising the police and 'security services' You know, the ones who had no idea this was going to happen. This government is all about gloss and so are the senior police officers. Too much posturing and too little fore-thought and application
