February 20th, 2009 9:47pm Report this commentSlum Dog is the flavour of the month movie and everyone will feel they get the high moral ground voting for it. Bad film but there you go. I`m not entirely confident about Kate Winslet but so long as we don`t get the Weepie 'thank you children for being with Mummy on this journey' sick-bag speech I don`t really care.

Changeling was a film almost entirely about hats, and I never knew that shouting in Spanish in boring, tired and range-tinted films was good acting.

February 21st, 2009 12:06am Report this commentI'm not sure I agree with Peter Hoskin's alternative winners but he does make an important point. Invariably the film that scoops the most gongs isn't always that good (remember Titanic) but is the film with the widest appeal. The trend has got worse in the past twenty years with studios afraid to take risks and also relying on screen testing (and then changing) their films.

February 21st, 2009 7:11am Report this comment'The Reader' has been subject to a ridiculous campaign that it's a 'soft on Nazis' movie, so that makes Kate Winslet's job a bit too hard.
IN any event, Meryl Streep in 'Doubt' is on stronger form.
I haven't seen 'Slumdog' or 'The Changeling' but reviews suggest they are too flawed to match 'Doubt' and, in a rational world, 'The Reader'.

February 21st, 2009 7:16am Report this commentYou list your should win Best Picture as Frost/Nixon and your should win Best Director as Gus Van Sant for Milk. So presumably Frost/Nixon directed itself?
