A step towards a Myners resolution

James Forsyth 4:09pm

I wrote yesterday about how the Treasury Select Committee must call back Lord Myners and Sir Tom McKillop to ascertain whether the Committee had been misled over what the government knew and when it knew about Sir Fred Goodwin’s pension. Today comes news that John McFall, the chairman of the Committee, has asked McKillop to supply written evidence on this point. This is a welcome first step to getting to the bottom of this important matter.

Written evidence!!!

McFall doesn't want him there to be cross examined, does he! That would be very bad news for Myners!

This is yet another example of LABOUR SLEEZE!

Dear All

Isn't it nice to see that Mr. McFall, MP is now asking for written evidence after the McKillop event?

McFall shouldn't have waited till he was pushed; he is supposed to be competent.

The thing I would like to ask McFall to his face is; what's your problem?

I would also be keen to see what he intends to do with such evidence when it is clear that a face to face with McKillop and McFall's Committee is required.

The Committee is an instrument of the House of Commons not the Labour Party.

Yours sincerely

I misread your headline as "A step towards a Myners resignation" - something I doubt he'd be that bothered about. He could continue his business interests without having to pretend that legally avoiding tax and shorting companies is bad and he's still a peer for life in return for 6 months work.

Sorry to supply "written evidence" or "evidence in writting"? Needless to say, two very different things. The latter would suggest that he is trying to get to the bottom of it, the former that McFall is doing what he does best -- covering up for Gordon.

Are we to be surprised by McFall's actions? Does anyone believe that McFall actually asked his membership before making this request? Why does anyone believe that McFall is remotely interested in anything except for saving his and Brown's necks?

So, he's prepared to accept written evidence without affording his membership the opportunity to cross-question or elicit other detail? Yep, it's the old long grass routine from this petty and pompous 'Chairman'. As I said before - by his and his colleagues' actions we shall know them.
