Has Darling slipped up over the Dunfermline Building Society?
Fraser Nelson 6:21pm
Might the collapse of Dunfermline Building Society turn into a political scandal? Tonight, Channel Four news has an interview with Jim Faulds, its chairman, who appears to be saying the Treasury have been lying about him. He didn't want a bail out, he says, just a £20m loan (the spin had been that he wanted three to five times that). He also flatly denies Darling's claim that the building society had any sub-prime exposure.
Now, knowing the chaos surrounding every bank collapse it would be shocking but not surprising if Darling had misunderstood all this. Conspiracy theorists will note that, if he has slipped, it will be a good time for No 10 to send the dogs after him - punishing him for his collusion with Mervyn King over trying to stop Brown launching a second stimulus.
Darling was sounding mighty confident earlier, telling the BBC1 Politics Show "Mervyn King was right that all governments have to take a cautious stance. I speak to Mervyn King all the time so, no, I was not surprised." I would not be surprised if some knives come out for Daring now: this is how Brown operates. This story may just be the opening that Brown's attack dogs need.

If it carries on like this it wont last 14 weeks let alone 14 months.

March 29th, 2009 6:39pm Report this commentDarling was a disgrace on Marr, as was the programme. Darling's shifty and mendacious performance was Brown in disguise. You could almost see the strings.

March 29th, 2009 6:52pm Report this commentIf he did move against Darling, I reckon that would start the whole edifice to implode!
Darling could make a Geoffrey Howe resignation speech, where Brown would have to sit, pick his nose and squirm. Jack Straw would look contented like the Cheshire cat and Ms Harmon will be dreaming "It is my time"
The betting is will they last the Summer?

March 29th, 2009 6:55pm Report this commentThis would be the opportunity for Darling to give his own Geoffrey Howe speach; now wouldn't that be a splended idea?

March 29th, 2009 6:57pm Report this commentThe thing is, it doesn't matter even if Darling has slipped up
The Labour Party, and in particular their front bench, will always be protected by our forever protective mainstream media, in particular the BBC, Channel 4, The Times et al.

Probably not as many as Hoon since his continued survival must be due the secrets he threatens not to carry to the grave.

March 29th, 2009 7:38pm Report this commentAll RBS needed was a little rights issue, then a substantial government underwritten rights issue with nil take up by shareholders, then a massive toxic asset insurance. Thats seems to be how these horrors unfold and it is not surprising if the Treasury have finally wised up to the fact that they might as well go in mob handed at the begining and establish the truth whatever the management want to claim.
However am I being too suspicious to think that the briefing against the Chancellor is coming from somewhere very near to Dunfirmline and it's local mafia via No10. Not only an opportunity for Brown's attack dogs, but a situation that they have actively engineered to punish Darling.

March 29th, 2009 10:19pm Report this commentCorrect me if I am wrong, but you seem to be confirming my own thoughts about Darling's coded message that he and King are in one mind. Things are pretty dam serious I believe, the Queen has sought private counsel with King also, suggesting serious doubts all round regarding Brown's bloody sanity. I think I am glad I do not know everything because the little I do seem to perceive is scary enough.

March 29th, 2009 11:15pm Report this commentThis lot ain’t going nowhere before June 2010. There is no way they are giving up the extra pension that one year’s extra minister’s salary brings. They can see the writing on the wall. They are going to lose their seats and a hostile government is not going to soften the blow with cushy quango jobs for the boys and girls.
My prediction? It all depends on Alistair Darling. If he survives the coming onslaught then the country has a chance at the end of a long hard road of toil and sweat. If he goes down then the madman will scorch earth and borrow to the destruction of the currency and the UK’s creditworthiness.
If Darling is reshuffled does he get to make a resignation speech? If he goes under the No. 11 after tea with Merv then he certainly won’t.

March 31st, 2009 12:35am Report this commentLet's just say this little fiasco will not do Labour any good in the Kingdom of Fife! Mr Fauld's fury seems genuine enough to me. At this rate the only decent banks left in Scotland will be the tiny but unltra canny Airdrie Savings Bank ( eight branches) and the Clydesdale. Sad indeed.
