Ex Labour Cabinet Minister: Brown is 'the biggest liar in modern politics'
James Forsyth 10:36am
It is no secret that there is real hatred between some ex-Blairite Cabinet Ministers and the Brownites. But this quote in Trevor Kavanagh’s column shows just how poisonous relations are:
The problem for Labour is that the press will eat up this kind of quote, counter-quote stuff. Also, the fact that Balls’ blood is in the water is going to encourage his internal enemies, of whom there are many, to try and wound hi so badly that he can't run for the leadership after the election.“We’re down to 26 per cent, but there is nothing to stop it going lower,” said an ex-Cabinet minister. “We are in freefall.“People accused Tony of telling lies but Gordon is the biggest liar in modern politics.
“The question on election day will be: Do you want Brown for another five years? Millions and millions of voters are going to say NO.”

April 20th, 2009 10:53am Report this commentI will only believe it is all up for Liebour when I switch on the alarm radio one morning and hear these big brave Bliarites denounce Bruin by name. IT doesn't take much courage to anonymously whisper to Fleet St hax. Also when is that supposedly moral paragon Frank Field going to leave his stinkingly corupt cesspit of a party? If he's really serious he would be gone already to the LDs or Tories. Or is it that even he prefers to cling to the perks and allowances involved in being MP for Birkenhead for just a little while longer.

April 20th, 2009 11:01am Report this commentSadly we're already seeing Labour fighting in public. If it's as bad as this today, imagine how it'll be when Brown slumps further in the polls or even in opposition.
As for Balls, he might want to be leader for selfish reasons but there's nothing so far to inspire the voter. He's spent his career as a technocrat sidekick to Brown when the mood today is for authenticity. He's ridden shotgun with Brown and should settle for his brief moment of power and the related expense account.

April 20th, 2009 11:10am Report this commentYour £15 billion' post has no comments - so let me say here I completely agree.
The place to watch and search is the NHS. It has had huge sums poured in and these will have enormous ongoing consequences if not pulled back.
Look here for where the budget body is being hidden. There are already cutbacks and job losses - NOW! The future will be more of the same - but Darling will attempt to hide it.
It has the potential to expose Labours hubris and their failure
And Brown a liar? !! Who'd a thunk it ??

April 20th, 2009 11:14am Report this commentWell at last someone has said what has been obvious for years.
But not just a liar, but a coward, bully and a truly unpleasant, chippy and disgusting individual. A prime minister by stealth - what a democracy!

The Guardian editorial is also most scathing. Is this a first?

April 20th, 2009 11:40am Report this commentYellowbelly Watch: Rather harsh on Mr Field, who is doing exactly what you criticise others for failing to do. Perhaps you are McBride carrying on from beyond the grave.
And nothing would typify the self-serving nature of modern politics more than to jump ship at this dismal stage. If I were Mr Field, I would not accept such counsels of despair, instead staying in the party I joined and, from the wilderness of opposition, help try to reshape it along the lines of its decent antecedents.

April 20th, 2009 11:51am Report this commentBrown the biggest liar in modern politics? This can't be right, surely?
After all he is a son of the manse and has a moral compass.
They'll be telling us next that Tony Blair is not a pretty straightforward type of guy.

April 20th, 2009 1:10pm Report this commentIt hardly seems fair that Brown should simply be awarded the crown as the biggest liar, without giving other possible contenders the opportunity to put forward their own claims.
There should be a proper contest, nominations, campaigns and all, conducted with full transparency, and without any rigging of the final ballot.

April 20th, 2009 3:51pm Report this commentJames,
Since the identity of this "ex-Cabinet Minister" is likely to be much debated, why not begin a CH T-shirt competition for the best advance guess?
I've got the shirt already, thanks, but my money is on C Clarke, and failing him J Reid. There's a real personal animosity there as well as blunt speaking.
It almost makes you feel sorry the chap's going to be out of work soon.

I don't think so. Today's Sun editorial is still, as usual, supportive of Brown. The excellent, Emeritus Political Editor, Kavanagh has been a different kettle of fish for some time.
