Not the headline they wanted

James Forsyth 5:30pm

On the BBC News site at the moment, the Budget headline is:

Tax rise as UK debt hits record
Brown’s diversionary tactic doesn’t seem to be working.

Peston, Robinson and Flanders are all rubbishing the budget. They are all pointing out that the 50% tax rate will raise little revenue and is all about political posturing.

I think Labour's forgotten what happened to Smith's shadow Budget in 1992. Journalists suddenly realised how much extra tax they personally would pay and turned on Labour. Ditto now: maybe the Pestos / Boultons etc.,are now realising how much this will hurt them and not just "rich bankers". It's easy for the commentariat to be in favour of higher taxes when they don't have to pay for them. When they do they ask the same as the rest of us: what the hell am I getting for all this tax? Where's it all going? etc etc.

Obviously this doesn't apply to the likes of Pollytwaddle but then she gets her income paid to a company and has some of her wealth in Italy so even she doesn't pay her full whack.

But seriously, is there really no way to get this criminal gang in the dock?

Some bravehearts in the BBC remain loyal to the cause. Huw Edwards interviewed TUC general secretary Brendan Barber and was told that Barber is 'terrified' by the possibility of Tory cuts. Terrified? When Labour has already started the process?
Parroting the Dear Leader, Mr. Barber said that we 'must invest our way out of recession.' New Labour must truly adore people like Huw Edwards. He's such a simpleton.
