Cameron defends Boris's ambition
Peter Hoskin 4:23pm
You've got to hand it to Cameron, he gave a smooth response to a question about Boris becoming PM on BBC Radio London earlier:
While I suspect the Boris leadership talk won't go away over the next few years, this kind of open-minded response suggests that the Tories are determined to suck any poison out of the story.“Why shouldn't he be ambitious? I think it's great and it does not worry me at all. I'm a Conservative, I think competition in all things is good including for the very highest jobs.”

There is too much fuss made in the media about the ambitions of politicians forcing them into carefully worded coded denials. There is nothing wrong with ambition and anybody who is good in any walk of life has the potential to rise to the top. If they wish to pursue this then good on them.
I should caveat this by saying that Gordon Brown is the worst PM in my lifetime (34 years) but there was nothing ignoble about his ambition - it was the way he went about it that poisoned the chalice before it was even lifted to his lips.

I would have thought that there are a large amount of MPs whose ambition it is to be leader of their party. Perfectly natural, no?

Nice for a change that a party can offer a choice...
