Arlen Specter, the moderate Republican Senator from Pennsylvania who faced a primary challenge, is switching to caucus with the Democrats in the Senate.

To be more accurate, I suggest you call Arlen Specter "the liberal Republican Senator..." And, as with the Democrats, the Republicans have shifted left since the 1990's. Conservatives and many true "moderates" in the U.S. are reaching the boiling point, hence the Tea Party demonstrations which were so poorly covered by so much of the British and American media.

What took him so long? He should have left the Republican party ten years ago. He was there just long enough to stab Rick Sanctorum in the back, after Sanctorum had supported him against pro-lifers. This is his last despicable trick - supply to the Democrats the deal-breaking majority they did not yet have.
