Gurkha victory is a victory for the House

James Forsyth 5:27pm

Parliament has handed away too many of its powers in recent years and the behaviour of too many of its members have brought it into disrepute, but today it did the right thing in standing up for the rights of Gurkhas. To my mind, any Gurkha who served should have the right to live here if they so choose.

Watching PMQs today, you sensed that the House was girding itself to assert its authority. The tell-tale sign was the near silence from the Labour side as Gordon Brown attempted to defend the indefensible. His emphasis on how the country could not afford to allow the Gurkhas, people who had been prepared to put their lives on the line for this country, to settle here particularly grated.

One really does wonder about Brown’s political antennae that he didn’t see what an absolute PR and political disaster these mean-spirited proposals were going to be for the government. The test now is whether the Labour rebels will stand firm and vote the same way on a binding vote if the government continues to refuse to back down.

PS It says a painfully large amount about what is wrong with our culture that the first quarter of an hour of BBC News’ Five O’clock bulletin has been dominated by speculation about swine flu and not this vote.

Any man or woman who serves in the British Armed Forces should be given British citizenship, full stop, no qualification. I do not care what colour or creed they are, what political views they hold or where in the world they come from. If they are prepared to pay the ultimate price for this Country, (which by the way most of us are not brave enough to do, including the vast majority of our politicians of all colours), then they AND their dependents should be welcomed with open arms.

The Governments stance on this issue has been an utter disgrace. Over the last twelve years they have let in millions of immigrants with no relationship to this country whatsoever. They let over a million East Europeans in two years. So 100,000 Gurkhas is easily accomodated. Brown doesn't care about the Military. That fact is well known.

It's not the Gurkhas this country can't afford. It's this Labour Government. A Gurkha has more courage in his little finger than Brown will ever have.

It's about time the Labour party showed the people of this country they are decent unlike the Government drawn from their once respected party.

I'm guessing that the Ghurkas do not have the same right to vote as Commonwealth citizens?
That'd explain why Brown is so anti. New Labour only follows its electoral interests these days. Good for the Labour MPs who rebelled.

The King of Spend, the Amphetamine Chancellor worried about cost! That’s a new one. No, me thinks his private polling showed that too many of these immigrants would vote Tory.

Well, contrary to your correspondent below, it looks like Cameron did indeed play it right at PMQs. Got in on the media chosen story (swine flu) and on the more meaningful one.

I'm surprised it got mentioned at all.

Utterly shameful, Brown using the excuse that it may have been too costly, after all the
billions he has frittered away.

He really doesn't get it.

Looking at the photograph of Joanna Lumley, Cameron and Clegg and listening to Phil Woolas' response, its as the British have finally understood they have been taken over by a malignant force. How cold the labour party have taken on Joanna Lumley, it just shows how utterly out of touch they are.

Not one member of this Government are fit to lick a Gurkha's boots. What has any of the Labour front bench ever done for this Country? BTW the fact that Jacqui Smith has anything to do with this decision is adding insult to injury. All she has ever done is leech of the taxpayer.

Where were the British charities- Oxfam, Save the Children et al- in the debate about the Gurkhas? I would have thought that Oxfam should have had a lot to say about the Gurkhas, considering that these former soldiers come from one of the poorest countries, and Nepal would benefit from having ex-Gurkhas living in the UK and sending remittances back home to their less well-off relatives and communities. But then these days these very charities are tight-lipped about criticising the Government, which may explain why they kept silent about the plight of Gurkha soldiers.

Ms Lumley was clearly observed by two police officers when she flourished a lethal looking kukri. CCT will identify these officers and disciplinery procedings will follow.

All Hail the Gurkhas. Not only do they know how to fight real wars, they also know how to fight a propaganda war. The Government should've known they can't win in the infamous 'court of public opinion', against people who declare themselves proud to fight for Britain and salute a portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth II.

I'm probably just repeating what everyone else has said. It's just unbelevable that any British government could shit on the Gurkhas. They import scum from anywhere in the world who hate us & owe us no loyalty in favour of loyal Gurkhas.I really wonder why the Gurkhas bother with us at all.I suggest they go to Calais & get on a lorry & will be made welcome.I hope the Gurkhas know the British people are behind them even if our government isn't.The Gurkhas are more loyal to the country than a lot of British born whose loyalties lie elsewhere but wouldn't think of living there. They'd rather stay here & suffer the British way of life.I hope I may one day be proud again to be British!

RESIGN?
HONOUR?
ABILITY?

Three words that sum up the Labour Party!

My fear for Gordon Brown is that the pressure could kill him. Is there not one decent person in that cabinet that will speak to him and, for his health and the health of the country go now!

I may have missed something important, but if thh Gurkhas signed up to a "deal" not including citizenship is it then not fair that citizenship is not included? I.e., does the Government of the UK deliver its part of the contract with the Gurkhas even if it does not offer citizenship? Or, did I miss the fact that citizenship was always offered (explicitly or implicitly) and has now been withdrawn.

Could someone enlighten me please?

One need not fear a sudden huge influx of Gurkhas from Nepal. Most of them are settled within their own culture and would not wish to leave the country. The purpose of their military service is to retire relatively young on a pension that makes them wealthy in Nepal.

My respects to Joanna, Nick and the Labour MPs who followed their consciences and not a flawed party line based on disinformation and subterfuge.

They shouldn't be allowed in as they will just take money from the state kitty, which isnt fair as people like me who are poor and unable to work don't hardly get anything - £90 a week - and I've lived here ALL MY LIFE! Lots of people fought in wars but we dont just let them in do we?
