When a picture speaks a thousand words

Peter Hoskin 5:38pm

Daniel Finkelstein has picked up on the most striking aspect of Michael Martin's valedictory statement earlier: the cutaways to Brown and Cameron when the ex-Speaker laments their failure to "show leadership" over expenses last year.  Fairly or unfairly, it seems to speak volumes about their characters.  You can see it 0:19 into this video on the Beeb's website - classic stuff.

It doesn't contain the contrasting Brown 'n' Cameron shots, but here are some more highlights of the Speaker's statement:

I never liked Michael Martin as speaker, he just wasn't up to the job. That doesn't, however, excuse the Prime Minister reading his notes while Martin is reading his resignation speech. There is such a thing as common courtesy. I suppose a man who hired Damian McBride wouldn't understand that sort of thing.

I suppose that Martin believes that, had the party leaders given a stronger lead on expenses, his wife might have claimed fewer taxio fares.

This national embarrassment of a Speaker has some nerve to come over all moralistic on his retirement.

These pictures just illustrate how much Brown is a part of the problem.

Watching the clip as it cut to Brown further reinforced my view that the man is bad and/or mad. He has not the faintest idea how he comes over in public or, presumably, in the company of his colleagues. Not good for the nation's premier statesman (ha! that'll be the day, eh?)

If ever there was a guy so far up his own ar*e, Gordon Brown must surely take the biscuit.

Out here in the real world, Brown wouldn't last two minutes in the company that most of us keep.

So, many thanks to Gordon Brown; the Labour Party proceeds on its trajectory to doom.

He's just getting on with the job

or maybe he's looking for his resignation speech

If Brown were the lowest, slowest, dimmest, dumbist, glummist backbencher, that slumped, gormless world-of-his-own torpor would be enough to get him laughed at.
As it is, he makes us, the British people, look ridiculous.
