Only one Tory nominated Bercow

James Forsyth 6:28pm

Andrew Sparrow points out that of the 12 MPs nominating John Bercow, only one is a Tory. (I, like Andrew, can also only think of one other Tory who is backing him). It is hard to see how someone can do the job of Speaker with any success with so little support from the principal opposition party.

If Bercow gets it; the conservatives should have him deselected, then 'bugger' with convention, have someone run against him if he stands as a labour or independent candidate.

Obviously, it's up to Bercow to win Tory support. If he's truly impartial then, in a way, he can - particularly if he helps with reform.
