Sky News could become more like Fox

4:36pm

There was an interesting little article in The Guardian this weekend reporting that Rupert Murdoch wants Sky News to become more like his American news channel Fox.  Murdoch made the comments  to a House of Lords comittee that was touring the US as part of an inquiry into media ownership. The mogul wants Sky to become more like the famously right wing Fox to provide "a proper alternative to the BBC" , although he also said his influence at Sky - which is run by his son James - was minimal, complaining "nobody at Sky listens to me".

Discounting a bungled relaunch in 2005, Sky News has become a respected and successful channel that now confounds the numerous critics who dismissed it at its launch. In the next edition of The Business - out from Thursday - I survey the emerging international English language news channels, many of whom see Sky News as a poster child. It could be dangerous to change the channel's direction now it has proved such a roaring success.
