Where's Jack?
Fraser Nelson 7:38pmHas anyone heard from Jack Dromey? Last time a Labour funding crisis emerged, the party Treasurer was touring TV studios venting pious anger. Now, silence. There are plenty unanswered questions about all this.
If Brown and Benn didn’t take this money from Janet Kidd (the secretary in whose name the cash was being donated) then why did Harman take it? What did they know that she didn’t?
Isn’t it rather odd that, as Dromey’s wife, Harman was not better informed?
One question Brown was not asked in No10: did any of his staff know about this dodgy cash? He has a political unit (someone had to replace poor Ruth Turner) so did any of his people know about this money laundering episode but not tell him?
I am informed by a normally reliable Labour source that this is very much out of character for Peter Watts who is regarded as one of the good guys . In which case what prompted this behaviour?
My Labour source concludes this is much more damaging for Brown than the lost discs, because this is not a government blunder but from the Labour Party itself, the bedrock of the operation. "Labour members will be bewildered, and asking what the hell is going on". But he thinks Brown will survive. “After all, it can hardly get any worse.” Can it?

Does anyone ever bother to tell him anything about Labour Party finances? Or does he just sit there like the 3 monkeys, seeing hearing and telling no evil? On his own account he is treated with complete disregard and kept out of every important loop. If I were a Labour member, I would be asking "wehat is the point of Jack Dromey?"

November 28th, 2007 10:15am Report this commentThis is a disgraceful episode but don't forget, please, that the lost discs risk blighting our childrens lives for years. There is nothing to stop anyone getting copies of their birth certificates, obtaining passports in their names, stealing their entire identity, even getting themselves registered on the ID database with their own biometrics in our childrens' names and blighting their credit records. The Government has come up with no proposals to deal with this; indeed, it gives the impression that it is our problem not theirs and that it has no responsibility to put right the enormous problem it has caused us all. Much as I enjoy watching Labour squirm as we find out again what an unscrupulous and dishonest bunch they are, I am more concerned about the possible harm done to my children and that will continue for years. So if Labour politicians think that this is more damaging than the risks 7 million families are now facing, it only shows how out of touch with the real world and real people are.
