Tories with biggest ever YouGov lead
James Forsyth 9:52pm
The new YouGov poll for the Telegraph puts the Tories 11 points ahead, which is the first time the pollsters have found the Tories to have a double digit advantage. Add to this the fact that Labour’s funding practises are now to be investigated by the police (again) and the worsening economic conditions and it is clear that Gordon Brown faces a long, hard winter. If there was a credible Labour challenger Westminster would be buzzing with leadership speculation right now—but there’s not, so it’s all quiet on that front. Meanwhile, Tony Blair carries on trying to solve the problems of the Middle East. How Labour MPs must miss him tonight.

November 29th, 2007 10:29pm Report this commentIt was quite credible that no-one, at all would miss Tony Blair. But yes, it seems that Labour have found someone worse that The Insincere One, to replace him. And can we be clear -Brown was never competent, he just didn't say anything. More and more of what he did, beavering away at the Treasury is now becoming apparent and it is pure incompetence. Think of Blair and Brown as Laurel and Hardy and you're pretty much there.

November 30th, 2007 12:23am Report this commentWe seem to be entering an unstable period in British politics. It is difficult to imagine Cameron as a Prime Minister surviving the demands of real policies for real government. Ask Tamzin; she knows!

November 30th, 2007 3:33am Report this commentCould Alan Johnson be the 'credible challenge' refered to in this article? His silence since Brown took over has been deafening, even tough he has a very large, important, high propfile department.

November 30th, 2007 5:12am Report this commentCan it really be true that a General Election which gave the Tories 43% and Labour 32% would only probably make Cameron Prime Minister? Can it really be true? Can it?

November 30th, 2007 10:08am Report this commentThe Labour Party is at the end of its current period of hegemony. I am sure that in his heart Brown knows he has as about as much chance of success as King Canute. My only worry is that the two most likely to succeed, Cameron and Osborne, are just not up to the job. We are in a bumpy few years.

November 30th, 2007 11:09am Report this commentDear JF: why does King Canute always get such a bad press? He was in fact sagely demonstrating to his fawning courtiers that a king did not have the power to reverse the laws of nature. Now translate that image to November 2007, with the variant that the courtiers are syc of being sycophantic and King Mcbottle continues to insist that the sea is actually, in real terms, further away than ever.
