Things can only get worse

James Forsyth 9:07am

There was a moment of unintentional humour during Jack Straw’s interview on the Today Programme when he was asked if Labour had changed the culture as well as the law around fundraising and replied, “We have changed the culture quite considerably”. You can say that again, Jack.

The problem for Labour is that this scandal is now damaging more and more of the party. So The Guardian front-page headline this morning screams, “Harman implicates Brown”.  While David Abrahams is clearly not going to go quietly; when the Telegraph asked him how many times he’d met Gordon Brown he responded, "You don't remember how many times you've eaten porridge for breakfast."

When you consider that today’s YouGov poll which shows the Tories with their largest ever lead from that pollster was conducted before this recent string of revelations you realise just how bad things could get for Labour.

PS Do watch Matt and Steve Richards of the Independent discuss how this story will play out on Newsnight yesterday.

Actually there was another Freudian slip, when the Man of Straw referred to "Mr. Mandelson". Things can only get bitter...

"Porridge". Now there`s a word to conjure with. It must be on a few peoples minds this morning.
