Will Boris run?
4:34pm
Nick Robinson doesn't take fliers. The more calls I make on this Boris for London story, the more true it seems: wheels are indeed in motion. Perhaps what he needs is encouragement. He'd certainly have my full support - no prizes who'd win a Red Ken v Steve bleeding Norris contest. So what do Coffee House readers think? Should we start a petition?

July 4th, 2007 5:03pm Report this commentI don't want to be the ghost at the banquet here, but it seems to me that if Boris stands, the most likely result is that most of London's floating voters will watch him, go "Haha, how splendid, good old Boris" - and then vote for Red Ken. The reality is that the candidate needs to be somebody who is very appealing, but also needs to come over as somebody who can project an image of ability to run a complicated and difficult executive position. I'm not saying Boris couldn't run London, but I think that a lot of people will simultaneously like him but be unable to picture him running a city that's arguably nudging New York out as Capital Of The World. Red Ken, for all his grotesquerie, can lay claim to executive experience and Running Stuff. In short, if Boris is put forward, I think a lot of people will treat the candidacy as a "turn" that represents a last ditch punt by the Conservatives for want of a more heavyweight candidate (and it will certainly be portrayed as such by the other candidates). I would add that it gives me no pleasure to say this and it's not a judgement on Bozzer's actual qualities.

July 4th, 2007 5:10pm Report this commentBoris for mayor! It would be a good job for him because he wouldn't have to resign after each gaff. Ken has already shown that the London mayor is gaff-proof. http://bedejournal.blogspot.com

July 4th, 2007 10:26pm Report this commentI can see I'm in a minority of one on this issue. I'll duly hang my head in shame - but I still think it would be an incredibly risky idea and very likely to blow up in our faces (sorry Boris - nobody will be happier than I if I am proven wrong).

July 5th, 2007 7:54am Report this commentI'm a floating voter, and I would love to be able to vote for Boris Johnson. I'm firmly in the anyone but Ken camp, but Boris would be a positive magnet for my vote. At least the next four years would be memorable.
