The Ukraine's Iron Lady
James Forsyth 7:21pm
With today’s news that Yulia Tymoshenko, one of the key figures in the Orange Revolution, is set to return as Prime Minister of the Ukraine, it is well worth re-reading the interview that Allister Heath did with her in May last year. What’s particularly interesting--apart from her saying that Margaret Thatcher is her role model--is the tough line that she takes on the question of Russia and her country’s energy independence.

December 7th, 2007 2:13amProblem is, she can take as tough a line as she likes on energy independence - the Russkies have got energy, Ukraine needs it. Ukraine's oil covers only 13% of current national demand, and its gas only 25%. Of course, being dependent on Russia is a nightmare, particularly these days. But it'll take decades to build up nuclear alternatives, and Ukraine has a lot at stake on its transit gas pipes from Russia to the west. Ukraine is better off pretending to be nice to Uncle Vladimir, while looking round for a way to put something in his soup or get him sectioned.
