Led Zeppelin are back
Matthew d'Ancona 7:52am
Twenty seven years after it was grounded by sudden death, the Zeppelin flies once more – and none of us can quite believe it. The three surviving members of the ultimate rock group – Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, and John Paul Jones – take to the stage at London’s O2 Centre, joined by Jason Bonham, son of their late drummer John Bonham, and burst without ceremony into “Good Times, Bad Times”.
It is an extraordinary occasion in every way, the most eagerly awaited reunion in the history of rock’n’roll. Each member of the audience, gathered from 50 countries, is conscious that more than a million (some say 20 million) people applied online to be here tonight: we are the Charlie Buckets of rock, winners of the golden tickets. There are women in kaftans and no shoes. Led-head dads with their kids. A couple of seats further down my row, Naomi Campbell dances ecstatically. Like I say, extraordinary.
Plant, craggier, bearded but still distinctive with his golden mane, looks like the Norse god of denim, rattling a pair of tambourines against his 59-year-old snake-hips. “Ramble On” sounds as good as ever, and then Page matches him with some seriously filthy blues on “Black Dog” and “In My Time of Dying”. So epic is Led Zeppelin’s legend, so hyperbolic the stories, and so adhesive the “heavy rock” label, that one easily forgets that they were, in origin, a hardcore blues band: one of the most prodigious and infectious mutations of the R&B virus to be produced in this country.
Plant speaks for everyone when he confesses that the band has experienced “thousands and thousands of emotions” getting ready for the concert. Then it’s back to basics with “Trampled Under Foot” – as the singer explains, Led Zep’s homage to Robert Johnson’s 1930s classic, “Terraplane Blues”.
Then it’s “Nobody’s Fault But Mine”: and again, the tribute to the Staple Singers is explicit. The evening is all about roots – not only the revived passions of the audience but the well-springs of black music from which this great music drew its original inspiration. It's not about generation gaps any more - how could it be? - but reviving a spirit, passing it on.
Fifty minutes into the set, dry ice wafts on stage: but there are few frills. Page and Plant perform a mesmeric counter-point on “Since I’ve Been Loving You”, two voices (one electric) competing down the decades for the attention and the adoration of the crowd. In the old days, they called their venues the “Houses of the Holy”: even now, you can see that they meant it.
“There are certain songs that have to be done,” says Plant, “and this is one of them” – “Dazed and Confused”, of course, a number so embedded in collective memory that it has given its name to (amongst other things) a movie and a magazine. Page and the short-haired John Paul Jones jam greedily, looking for all the world like a bank manager and a magistrate being naughty with amps and feedback while their wives are off at their bridge evening. The double neck guitar gets an outing, as does the famous Page violin bow, pulled across the strings to recreate the crazed sound of the Seventies.
One of the best jokes in "Wayne’s World" was the guitar shop where you weren’t allowed to play “Stairway to Heaven.” What a burden to have to play it, then, because you wrote it and there is no escape. There was a time when the band grew to hate the song. But tonight they deliver it with passion and drama. “Hey Ahmet, we did it,” says Plant, in memory of Ahmet Ertegun, the Atlantic Records founder who launched Led Zep and a hundred other incredible acts.
“Kashmir” and “Whole Lotta Love” follow, and then, after just over two hours, the evening winds up with “Rock’n’roll”. Plant gives it his all: “Been a long lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely time…”
Yes, it has. But I have a hunch that we will not have to wait too long for more. They look as if they are enjoying it, that they have rediscovered the fun of being an amazing band. At the end, Jason Bonham falls to his knees and performs a deep “we’re not worthy” to the three original members of the group: for a moment, he’s another fan: the boy whose father “Bonzo” died after drinking 40 shots of vodka in a day, but not before teaching his son how to play drums.
So the family firm lives on. Forty years after its foundation, it is a pleasure to report that the Song Remains the Same.

December 11th, 2007 5:14pm Report this commentI cannot remember who said it, but someone said at the early beginings that the band would fall like a "lead Zeppelin" and hence was the name of the band (reduced to Led for Pronunciation), guess he is "Dazed & Confused" after all this legendary success. I believe the Zeppelin never grounded it was only "over the hills and far far away" but still heared, so good to hear this news and a huge envy for those who attended at 02

December 11th, 2007 6:00pm Report this commentA night never to forget! Three men, with a broad stage to prowl and romp on, instead, congregate in the centre, in front of the boy cub, Bonham, adopted son of the best friend lost too young. They encourage and, it seems, ’protect' the apprentice. Page, a shock of white hair - the mad professor, forms, squeezes and blasts sounds of heaven and of hell out of the guitars. Plant, the Alfa-male, stomps and leads them, a Triumphant Tarzan, in his own back yard. JP Jones, inside but some how outside the group, maybe he morns his past collaborator of base and drum, he is the master craftsman of the beat, teaching and encouraging his drumming charge. Together, The Four, nothing and know one else, reached out to 18,000 others, having a firm purchase around each throat, each breast, each brain, transmitted pure pleasure such as to mark each and every soul, for ever.

Plant said they practiced for 6 weeks in preparation, you would have thought the ‘pause’ button had just been released after 19 years! December 11th, 2007 9:17pm Report this commentWish i was there... please god, let there be a tour! Great videos and reviews from every direction. Im happy even though i tried desperately for months to get a ticket and failed, because i know zep are once again the greatest rock band in the world.. by the way it was Keith Moon who said they'd go down like a 'lead zeppelin'. Jimmy liked the name and it stuck, dropping the a from lead in fear of yankies mispronouncing the word! The band were considering the name 'Whoopie Cushion' before the new and improved band name came along, thanks Moony!

December 11th, 2007 9:24pm Report this commentStill not sure what i actually witnessed..it really was that jaw dropping! I last saw Led Zeppelin together at Knebworth in 1979...that was a long time ago..in between we've had some pretty horrendous re-union efforts..admittedly not as Led Zeppelin..even Page had said they were awful..Live Aid and the Atlantic Anniversary especially..it would have been easy to write the group off as past it and only really capable of making a mess of the really special occasions..Page/Plant..showed together they could always kick up a riot if they wanted to..it was hard to see how J P Jones would ever agree to doing anything after the way Plant was pretty rude to him around the Page/Plant No Quarter era,but it seems we were wrong in every way..it may have been the importance of the occasion that got the best out of them, but i have a feeling they always had it..they needed a spark and that was Jason Bonham playing the way he did Monday night..he really was a revelation the way he worked with J P Jones on bass..Page bless him was untouchable..the man is an icon..the moment he walked on the stage you were in the presence of someone truelly incredible..it was obvious he meant business just from the way his amplification was set up..this was Page's Knebworth look even down to the Mystical symbom on the speaker cab..the one thing that really blew me away was J Bonham's kit..transparent yellow no less the cymbals had the 3 interlocking circles on them as well! It was incredible to think just how long this group had been together and all they had been through..but still they tore the O2 down in the opening salvo of Good Times Bad Times..It is hard to see where they could go from here..one thing is certain though..if they plan on a tour and it's to say a final goodbye it will be one hell of a way to leave the world music stage..

December 13th, 2007 3:54am Report this commentZep never went away and all I saw of the concert ws the tv newsclips but, even then, that sound was unmistakeable. My only time of seeing the Great Four was when they toured the unverities n 1975 and I was at Southampton. I queued for an hur for two £1 tickets and on the night for 30 minutes as the Union "marshalls" ushered the crowd in to the Students Union hall. There I stayed fo nearly 3 hours and sat, danced, listened to and felt the awesome power of their music, a 2 hour set plus encore. Kids today think they've got great music, no way. You watch and feel with Zeppelin and the stage show was unforgettable, Jimmy with the violin bow, John Boham going crazy with Moby Dick, Bob Plant with th obvious Whole Lotta Love, Rock and Roll and Heartbreaker and JPJ keeping it crisp and staying tight with Bonham. Like any fan, I've got the original vinyl but the most important thing I've got is the memory, clear and crisp now after 32 years which will sta with me for what's left of my days. If a tour deos happen, no more lotteries for tickets, be fair to the real fans who love the group and give us all a chance to support them now as we did in our younger days. Great to see them back and unaltered in their performance by the advancing years. I'm wellng up with my memories now. Thanks, Led Zeppelin, for changing my life for the better just through great music.

December 13th, 2007 9:25am Report this commentI remember playing Stairway to Heaven at our School Morning Assembly 36 years ago and Led Zeppelin have always been part of my growing up experience. I had never seen Led Zeppelin live and I was fortunate to be at the O2 concert with my best friend who was also always an avid Led Zeppelin fan - WOW !! it was very emotional and was just like a portal with that very same "Stairway from Heaven" had just opened up in front of our eyes and presented Led Zeppelin on stage to us all !! - I can now die a very HAPPY man !!

Saw them again in 74 at Earls Court ( the Sat night )tickets were £2.50 Let's hope they tour - and i don't mean the country's mega stadiums like Sheffield, Manchester MEN and the like, they ought to do three nights each at more provincial halls like Bradford etc

December 13th, 2007 2:48pm Report this commentI was at the O2 with two tickets, girlfriend, a big smile, but surrounded by very anoying Americans. Unfortunately. Im local to both Rob and Jason. I have bumped into Rob 3 times in the last three weeks. The last time the Friday before the gig. When I asked he was adamant that it would be a one off. But even from my heady view point I could see he was full of it and beaming from ear to ear. I think he had forgotten what it was like to play those songs at full tilt. Lets admit it whenever he has plyed Zep tracks at his own gigs there is always something not right, something missing. But at the O2 everything was just the way it was meant to be. I know alot of Jasons familly too. They were all there Monday nite. The unofficial line is that there are going to be a series of stadium gigs if they can all agree terms. It is well documented that Jim is up for it. Not sure on Johns point of view. Looks like tuff luck for Foreigner they will have to find another drummer. Lets hope things can be sorted so Rob can still do his own music thing, and spend the winter months at home in the Midlands. The best place to be. Cheers !!

December 13th, 2007 9:38pm Report this commentI was very lucky to be in one of the boxes at O2. I`m not a die hard fan but still respected them as a legend. I guess I can be more subjective than others but I have to say the sound mix was very poor. Way too much big drums and bass. stairway was very mushy ..sorry but in terms of sound take that did it better as did the stones and elton john

December 13th, 2007 10:23pm Report this commentWe all loved and revered the old masters of the Blues the greatest teachers any musician worth his rock & roll boots could have learnt from, but Page, Plant, Bonham and Jones took us into a new era , they surpassed anything that had ever been done before not only did they learn from those great old bluesmen but went on to create history in their own right and if this was to be the very last time that the band play together the world will be in mourning till it finds it very own Stairway to Heaven. ( God forbid that this was their final performance )Pockets if you ever get to read this then tell Bob that us mere mortals wont be around as long as you guys, it would be great if you could do maybe a couple more gigs around the country and maybe even one done here in the southwest,so why dont you take a Misty Mountain Hop down here and see this old Black Dog sit up and beg.And in the words of Tolkein, the road goes on and on and so does L Z ( Keith Moon got it all wrong boy's because your the only ones who ever got it right)dont let it end here !!!!!

December 14th, 2007 2:39pm Report this commentI too saw Led Zep for the first time at Ally Pally in 1972 and went to both weeks at Knebworth in 1979. Absolutely the only band that still makes we want to go to another of their concerts before I kick the bucket. Would love them to do a tour. Fat and 60. F....it. Still dying to see them again. And Chico from Newcastle, remember Knebworth in 79? Brilliant time. Hope you're still around. Please do another tour and make all of us Zep fans happy.

December 14th, 2007 4:06pm Report this commentJacko, like so many others in these days of instant stardom you have completely missed the point. The power of this band's music, of the late 60's, early 70's remember, will live forever very few other bands can compete with this! Who gives a toss if the bass is off a bit. I, like the other message posters, like my music raw, and remember those days with affection.

December 14th, 2007 5:53pm Report this commentIt's great that so many 'little people' (don't mean that in a bad way)got to see the band and in many cases fulfilled a dream. If it is true though, as I suspect it is, that many celebs gained entry simply via their so-called status then that is an OUTRAGE, and if the band had anything to do with it shame on them!! Totally out of order under the circumstances.

December 14th, 2007 6:13pm Report this commentSteve R - If you bump into Robert again, could you please ask him if there is definatley going to be a DVD of the gig released, as everyone who was there (including my good self!!) agree it was spectacular and we need this DVD. Agree Jason was fantastic. Oh .. and the DVD must be the whole gig and nothing but the whole gig - wo cares about a bit of feedback or the odd bum note. Saw them at Knebworth in 79 - the anticipation meant this gig was greater. Who's Foreigner?

December 14th, 2007 8:08pm Report this commentLucky all you people who were there. I, too, wish that non fan celebs wouldn't get tickets. But that's rock'n'roll. I saw Zep at Earls Court - Plant FORGOT some words to Stairway. I also saw Plant with the first band after Zep, in Brighton. It was REALLY good - no Zep tracks at all! I've also seen Jimmy with Eric Clapton at Guildford Civic, no less. TOUR? ME TOO! I can't believe there isn't a world farewell already organised. After all - The Eagles did it (another awesome gig, but I'm biased), the Stones roll on. I'll be in the queue (but only online!).

December 15th, 2007 7:41am Report this commentFirst saw them at the Bath Festival of Blues and Progressive Music in 1970. Still got the programme! They were fantastic then. Saw them again in Brighton in 1971/2. Also seen Robert Plant and the Strange Sensations a couple of times. Obviously Rob has been doing these other gigs to ' keep his hand in' for the time when he knew he would be on stage again with JPJ and JP at the 02. This is because he is God and God is able to see into the future!! Then to find that my son had applied for 02 tickets and got 2, and that he wanted to take me was unbelievable !! It is almost impossible to describe my feelings at the thought of seeing LZ play live again, and I am sure many people posting here will know what I mean. After so many years of constantly listening to LZ then to see them live again completely blew me away. And to realise that they can still produce the same sounds. It was like bridging a gap and confirmed them as the world's best ever rock band. And Jason Bonham; well, AMAZING is an understatement. Totally fitted in with the others and played superbly!! So many young people there as well who must have become fans simply through listening to LZ records. Not sure if I was the oldest rocker there (66) but I felt 26 again listening to LZ play. Immediately they started playing, that familiar Led Zep sound filled the arena and brought tears of emotion to my eyes, and I wasn't p...ed!! I deliberately stayed sober so that I could listen, enjoy and, most of all, remember the night. Many others have said that the postings here have brought tears to their eyes, and reading those comments has also brought tears to my eyes. What a superb, amazing, incredible band. What other band's music could ever reduce a man of 66 to tears just by listening to them and reading about them. Still can't believe that it actually happened, and that I actually saw them live again after 35 odd years.

December 15th, 2007 11:29am Report this commentGreat Review, great thread, great gig. I was there with the celebs, a true fan in a sea of egos. I will exempt Dave Gilmour who was sitting in front of me from criticism, the rest were leaches - no names for fear of expensive lawyers. Have seen Zep many times before. This was not the best performance, but it was the best experience of my life. What an atmosphere. Still the greatest group of musicians assembled in one place. Please tour, but make sure you rehearse like you clearly did for this gig. Oh, and Jason - you are worthy!

It was worth all the cold, rain, Hells Angels, flying coke tins, and waiting. It will be a deathbed memory for me...I was right in front of the stage, in a sheer wall of sound that was the best music I've ever heard. PLEASE Led Zeppelin...do a tour for all the fans that couldn't see you in London. I'd go anywhere to see them again.

December 17th, 2007 10:45pm Report this commentOne week on and it's still sinking in - the enormity of it all. I will always remember walking up to the O2, ticket deep in pocket and wrist band firmly tucked away. I felt so overwhelmed with the excitement and tension that I was in a state of near levitation and light headedness (and it had nothing to do with the London Prides in the Pilot, .... Martin....). Like so many people who were there (not the plastic celeb "fans"), it was like a final closure on nearly 35 years of this band and their music being present at every turn in my life. I always feared that they would never reform with Jason and therefore I would lie in my deathbed wondering "if only". But you did it. And so like everyone in the O2 a week ago, I would like to say thank you so much. But I would also like to ask you, ever so politely and respectfully, to tour again for the millions of fans who weren't as lucky as me and who will wonder - "if only...."

December 18th, 2007 6:12pm Report this commentThis is the most active thread. Does this tell us something about the age and readership of The Spectator?
Have the rock fans of the 70s become the establishment? This may explain a great deal especially if those who wanted to be Jimmy Paige when they grew up became under-secretary at the treasury instead.
Well, I suppose if it's the only way you can afford a Gibson Les Paul and a Marshall Stack...
