Is Fabio the man to bring an end to forty years of hurt?
James Forsyth 12:46pm
The most encouraging thing about the news that Fabio Capello is set to become England manager is his refusal to accept egos in his team. One of the problems that has so blighted England in recent years is our obsession with star players at the expense of the team itself; exhibit a is how long the Lampard--Gerrard partnership was kept going despite the fact it was evident the two of them could not play together. Equally, the England team is blighted by mediocre players whose huge wage packets persuade them that they’ve made it. Just look at how many of them swan around in white or red boots—which really should be the preserve of the odd exceptionally skilled Brazilian.
The talent is there for England to have a decent side, we just need a manager who can pick the best XI and get the players to perform at the same level for their country as they do for their clubs. For the optimists among us, you can get 14 to 1 on England to win the 2010 World Cup.

December 12th, 2007 1:02pm Report this comment"you can get 14 to 1 on England to win the 2010 World Cup." It never takes long for the English. One semi-final appearance outside England in 50 years of trying and yet they still delude themselves that they should be regarded amongst the favourites for any tournament that comes along. Good luck to Capello though I fancy he'll only be one bad result away from having his nationality and his language skills thrown in his face.

December 12th, 2007 1:43pm Report this commentI completely agree with you over Gerrard and Lampard, James. But choosing to leave one of them out is the easy part. Much more difficult for the team is to learn (as Graham Taylor famously said) to play football with your head. Capello will need to be more of a psychologist than a football tactician if he is to lead England to win a tournament.

SOMEONE NEEDS TO CRUSH THE EGOS IN THE ENGLAND TEAM AND MAKE THEM REALISE IT IS AN HONOUR TO PLAY FOR YOUR COUNTRY AND YOU SHOULD GIVE IT YOUR ALL. ANOTHER POSITIVE ABOUT CAPELLO IS HE IS HAPPILY MARRIED AND HAS BEEN FOR 30 YEARS AND WILL NOT BRING THE TYPE OF SCANDAL ALA SVEN GORAN ERIKSSON! HE NEEDS TO LEARN ENGLISH ASAP THOUGH.

December 12th, 2007 11:31pm Report this commentWe moan but do nothing??? The FA board should all be sacked, they run the FA like their own little enterprise, it is not it belongs to the country its our national sport and we let a load of idiots run it, they say that Barwick and his team transformed the english game with their business sense and how they have bought a lot more money into the game? but what about the money they have lost? look at wembley, cost £300m to much and has a roof that does not shut it opens, then look at the cost to the country with england failing to qualify £5b if they were a city business they would be sacked immediately, the pitch at wembley was a disgrace but the Fa did not repair it because they had allready booked the car championship and are going to rip up the pitch so why do it twice NO the FA dicided to let England play the most important game for years on a very sub standard pitch, thanks Brian you realy are a Business man hahahaha, But worse is the apparent surprise and sudden arrest of Harry Rednapp this was just to stop the interest from the public for Harry to become England Manager, what about Terry Venables we played the best football ever in 96 no we will go for a man who doesnt speak the language wow what a business man our Brian is. I suggest we all refuse to go to England matches until the entire FA Board is changed.

The big picture is ,as in all over the UK, our coaching methods at the younger ages are all wrong so until we sort that out that mess it will take a miracle for any of the home nations to win anything

December 13th, 2007 12:46am Report this commentbut Marty it is the FA that forces the coaching technique with our youngsters for years. they have been told but they believe that a maths proffesor knows best and so it goes on they will not change the methods and so our kids will be shown how to be aggresive and skills will not be taught. the FA decide that with their FA coaching school. for heavens sake Trevor brooking got the FA to open a real training school but because of the money going on wembley the school has been shelved what a farce. No Marty we must sack the board first or at least let them stay but only run the business side all football decisions should be made by ex pro footballers and managers.

December 13th, 2007 1:15am Report this commentI'm so disappointed about the apparent disregard of Harry Redknapp for the England job particularly by Brooking. He has been harping on about the distrasous effect on English footbal by the influx of and the over-dependence on foreign elements and now that he had the chance to make a major contribution he opted for a foreign coach. Capello's CV is no doubt vastly superior to Redknapp's but surely Redknapp's knowledge of the English game at the various levels and his success with limited resources made him a serious contender. A very sad state of affairs.

December 13th, 2007 11:56am Report this commentCapello would be a good short term appointment (5-10 years), while we try and sort out our football, particularly at coaching level. Then one day we may find an Englishman capable of doing the job, with English players who technically proficient and intelligent, which seems to be lacking at the moment. For now, Capello seems the ideal choice.

December 13th, 2007 12:24pm Report this commentLets face it Steve McClaren was the left over management team of the last Foreign manager we had to endure, so for the FA it was no change. when in reality they had the chance to start a fresh with a new English manager and they were all availiable Curbishley, Redknapp,,Allardyce, and all have been successful with little funds to use, but Mr Barwick picks the weakest and least experienced probably hoping he would fail so they could sack him and get in another over paid foreign manager who this time has stated " He fancies having a go " especially at the wage of 4 million a year plus bonuses,Then there is the question if Mr Cappello is that good Why has he never been the Italian National Coach. Can you honestly see a non National getting the job in Italy,Germany,France,Holland need I go on, It can only happen with England. Lets face it the FA have touted the job all round Europe. Instead of backing our own English managers who would manage with pride and passion and more importantly can communicate with the players pitchside with his orders Not through an interpreter. The FA had the chance to put together a management team not just for 2 to 4 years but the next 10 to 20 years Starting with REDKNAPP/SHEARER/PEARCE and then bring in the younger managers like Coppel,Ince etc over the following years. The final point is When Mr Barwick and board sacked Steve McClaren they stated on TV that they would not be rushing into any decisions and will take their time to get the right man yet all they have interviewed is two, Moriniho and now Cappello and all in the space of a month. So ask yourself did the FA employ Mr Capello or did Mr Capello employ the FA ? I know what I think. To play for England you must be English so to manage England you must be English as well. To me the so called ENGLISH FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION board have no pride in being English they want to run the National side as a Club side, and there is enough Foreign managers running our top sides already. This was their chance to build for the future and once again they missed it.

December 14th, 2007 3:09pm Report this commentMartin Punch - He opted for a foreign coach because no decent English coach - save for Venables- has emerged in 30 years. Only two English coaches have won the First Division/Premiership in twenty years ( Kendall & Wilkinson). In that time 3 Scots have been successful. Nor has an Englishman come close to winning European Cup. Now that you have the best coach available all you need to do is find the players, as your so called "Golden Generation" is a myth . When Owen and Rooney who are your strikers ? Crouch & Bent !? AND you don't have one top quality goalkeeper in the whole league !

December 14th, 2007 4:02pm Report this commentWe have only just stopped paying off Stevn ,why don't we put these people on 1 year rolling contracts ,pay £500,00 ayear plus results bonus. While we are at it cut all football players salarys by 50% and only allow 5 overseas players on the pitch at any one time, the game would inprove overnight and a lot of young brits would get the chance to be good.

December 14th, 2007 5:31pm Report this commentWhat a laugh we use the same idiot that put McClaren in charge to choose his successor. We have too high expectations for our national team, who are rubbish. If Capello has any sense he will dump the ego's and promote the under 21's to the full squad, watch the youngsters play for their country they would perform because they know they are in the shop window.

Personally I can't see it'll be any different while we stick with the "established " squad. December 15th, 2007 3:22am Report this commentShould an English manager be appointed his only possibility of success is if he is given a free hand in all selections. Foreign managers do not seem to be operating under the same restrictions as those locally appointed. Give every applicant a level plane to work on. A Brit (English, Scottish or Welsh - or Northern Irish)would be successful if given the same ability to really sort out, and select, the best English team. The price of a foreign manager is only detrimental to our home team. Those who have the strength to decide should be made aware that an English Team should be just that. At my age, four score years, it would be wonderful to applaud a truly English team to victory - foreigners can only obstruct such a hope.

December 15th, 2007 4:32pm Report this commentI'm sorry the FA have done it again and chose a foreign manager to run the english team, but hey you carn't blame capello if someone comes up to you with £6.5 and say's are you working? do you want a job, and bring all your mates with you well yes anyone will accept an offer like that!!! what's wrong is we have to many foreign players in the premiership and we don't have that many players to choose from, also the foreign players know how the english players play they game that's why we have not won anything since 1966. The FA should limit the number of foreign players in the first 11 and give our boy's a chance to improve there game, hence have more to choose from. GIVE US AN ENGLISH MANAGER WHO WOULD HAVE PRIDE IN THERE COUNTRY!!!

The other is 3rd rate ex player with a handfull of england caps .The england players are over payed spice boys they should be payed on results with a goal bonus .If they fail or are booked or sent off hit them in the pocket dont pay them.

December 16th, 2007 2:33pm Report this commentYou will see a team based upon fitness, possibly finesse(Wayne, Steve,Rio)? That must be the goal, grass roots included. Capello, at age 61, like Trevor Brooking remembers the days when players hitched lifts whilst on 5 mile jogs! No hiding place for the egos either, we pay you play, 5 days a week, when necessary, e.g.Croatia beat England due their superior fitness levels.
Jose, brilliant, but a one team man, more interest in his dog than grass roots. I see a wakeup call coming, from Italy. In France, we welcome some competition. We think we now may have it. I think Italy welcome the same. My friends in Brazil and Argentina feel the same.
If you were to disregard your FA there are two men that should remain, Mr Brooking and Mr Pearce.
Then allow the Reading Manager to mature. He will eventually be your man, Steve Coppell?
btw, I worked(played) for Mr Ramsey(deceased) and Mr Robson. Both "Sirs" I believe. I guess Sir Robson will be contacted for advice.
