The sharks gather

James Forsyth 6:37pm

A whole slew of polls have now confirmed that Obama is surging ahead of Hillary here in New Hampshire. To compound the problem for the  Clinton camp, there is now a full media feeding frenzy. Bill’s comment that “We can’t be a new story, I’m sorry. I can’t make her younger, taller, malebecame the story for cable news this morning and now Drudge is claiming that there’s chatter about Hillary getting out of the race.

Considering the circumstances, it is hardly surprising that Hillary’s voice cracked on the trail this morning. But having just seen the video (available here) I think this moment humanises her more than anything else. It would take a heart of stone not to feel some sympathy for her as her dreams collapse around her.

I guess I have a heart of stone. (Better, I suppose, than a brain of cotton wool).

Nonetheless. I still hope that she manages to secure the Democratic nomination (ideally damaged and discredited). It will certainly galvanise the 'anyone but Hilary' crowd amongst independents - as well as ensuring that the Republicans turn out in full strength come November.

Inspired by a remark at the a-place-to-stand blog, I wonder whether it's possible for Ron Paul to stand as an independent candidate for the VICE-presidency? That would be fun.

I'm a stone-hearted old git as well, Max, but I am happy for Obama to prove what the Clinton camp should have known all along, which is that people DON'T LIKE HER. We all knew that when she was behaving as badly as she did in the White House 10 yeears ago or so.

It is gratifying to see HC heading for defeat. She fails to shine even in the primaries. Obama on the other hand is box office and will make a very interesting Democratic President.

I'm glad to see Hillary on the way out - but Obama is a a complete unknown, and likely to win - scary!

I can just see Chris Crocker on You Tube now........ "Leave Hillary ALONE! She's going through a bad time!.....

James, you soft-hearted big girl's blouse you! What the video clip immediately reminded me of was Cherie Blair's performance when The Mail cornered her and exposed her lies over "flatgate." Hillary had obviously been carefully rehearsed, probably by one of the numerous Clinton Hollywood gang, and her acting was pretty good. She gave the game away though when she got to the all so wistful bit about how some of us would know what to do on day one in the White House and some of us wouldn't. This should provide late night comedians and talk radio guys like Rush Limbaugh with ammunition for months.

Err, don't tell anyone, but I suspect Hilary was faking it in that video. Remember when Bill was trailing in his first race? What happened? Hilary turned on the taps, and the rest is history...

As Wilde remarked "It would take a heart of stone not to laugh".

I reckon 'you'd have to have a heart of stone not to laugh' would be the more accurate description.

I think you will find her tears were for herself. When she said 'It's about our country' she meant 'I'm supposed to be the President'. An ego as large as the US. They need another Clinton the way Britain needs New Labour.

Glad to see some brits see can see through the tears. Calculated yes. Acting badly yes. And Clinton's comment about fairytales concerning Obama when you actually remember him shaking his finger at America swearing he did not have sex with that woman...Pluease save us. from a democrat.

Hillary would not be my first choice for president, but the hatred engendered by this woman from the day the public became aware of her ("Oh my God, she's wearing a headband!) has fascinated and appalled me. I make no bets on the genuineness or effects of her tears, but number of people willing to make ugly and petty remarks in a forum in which the writer is visually anonymous says more about us as a culture than it says about Hillary. It's easy to be vicious when no one can see you or demand some rational evidence for you assertions, isn't it? Is all this nifty technology making our world better, or just nastier?

Hey, heart of stone guys you turned out to have heads of bone - she won and she will be President.
