Ken's doing a paper round at your expense

James Forsyth 2:35pm

Anyone wanting proof of the contempt in which Ken Livinsgtone holds the London taxpayer need only read this item on Guido’s blog. Not content with deluging Londonders with dubious, public information announcements that have an uncanny tendency to reflect well on the Mayor he is also posting his Londonder newsletter to the constituency offices of MPs around the country.

I've contacted the Mayor's office for a comment and I'll let you know what there justification is for this. Also watch out for more on Livingstone and his unsuitability for the job in the next few days.

Excellent link up. It's about time there was some co-ordination in the groundswell of public opinion against this government and its minions in all their forms. Pity the rest of the media can't seem to add 2 and 2.

Being a recipient of this rag, I'd be concerned if it were allowed during an election campaign. It's nothing more than a "vote for ken" propaganda sheet paid for by taxpayers. Surely it shouldn't be allowed under electoral rules?

Westminster, Wandsworth, K&C and Hammersmith and Fulham, all tory councils and all publish their own free sheet for residents.

The sad fact is that London deserves the newt keeper. Most of those that decided to vote in the last Mayoral election, voted for him. Not enough voted for someone else and most did not vote at all. So much for 'democracy'! Seems people love a 'cheeky chappie' (vide 'Only Fools and Horses'), so when the cheeky chappie picks your pocket, don't complain - it's what cheeky chappies do. Acclamation of spivs and traitors has become an endemic trait in our nation and our resultant weakness is now well known to those without and within who wish to do us harm and repay us for perceived historical sins.

Over in Grauniadland Jonathan Freedland is, yet again, quoting the watermelon line: http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/story/0,,2241422,00.html Given the amount of taxpayer funded resources Kenny put into digging it up on Boris this is beginning to look a tad feeble.

Further to my comments on Guido's blog yesterday, with the exception of 5 members who are usually based outside London, The Londoner is sent to all MPs care of the House of Commons and not to their constituencies. It is totally untrue to suggest that 5,000 copies of the Londoner are being sent to each postcode district in the UK. No copies are sent to each postcode district in the UK. There are 2,930 postal districts in the UK. To send 5,000 copies to each of these, as Guido claims, would cost almost £9 million per issue. £90 million per year (more than 30 times the Londoner annual budget). That would be a ridiculous expense.

GLA Spokesperson: Even if what you say is true a budget of £3m on a propaganda magazine still seems excessive. That money would be better spent on some of London's more pressing problems instead of on a propaganda magazine seeking to bury them under spin, especially in these days of internet and email. In fact if all councils and local authorities cut the unwanted printed propaganda rags from their budgets, which just add to the re-cycling burden, we might all pay a bit less tax. They would also save the salary costs of the propaganda teams needed to produce the rubbish in the first place.
