Clegg cosies up to the Tories?
Fraser Nelson 1:34am
Nick Clegg is finally doing the clever thing and openly talking about backing the Tories in coalition. I'm in a BBC studio waiting to do News24 paper review, and just have the FT's front page. But it quotes him saying that he:
"...could back a minority Tory government if David Cameron proposes genuine 'liberal' reforms."Now, I don't believe him for a minute but it gives him more leverage with Brown to flirt with Cameron.

February 8th, 2008 10:38amI hope that this ushers in a new era where the Lib Dems concentrate on attacking the government rather than the Conservatives. More unity against government by the opposition parties would increase the pressure on Brown and expose even more of the weakness in him and his cabinet. In the long term my views on the desirability of a genuine conservative party and a social democratic party contesting parliament, with the loony fringes of both and the extreme right/left loony hybrid change monkey now in power consigned to history where they belong, are well known. Never before has reason, common sense and moderation in government been required as it is now. The time for spin, knee-jerk politics pandering to media hysteria and jumped up oik advisors should be over. Far from both main parties moving to the centre ground I have seen it as both main parties dumbing down to the lowest common denominator of perceived popular culture and pursuing party political interests at the expense of good government and good opposition. Brown has lost sight of what is actually good for the country through the smokescreen of his own propaganda and the Tories seem unable to shift the debate to a mature reality. In this environment Nick Clegg and Vince Cable have the aura of mature, sensible politicians. They should capitalise on it.

February 8th, 2008 10:44amGet Cleggy to join Cameron and his clowns at PMQs and you'd confuse the heck out of the voters, they all look the bloody same.

February 9th, 2008 12:51pmWhat will be interesting is how Cameron and Co react. My view is that DC needs to put a wedge beween NC and his party - put in a few conditions for the Lib Dems - such as support for stricter immigration controls, reform of the European Union and anything else from which the Lib dems would blanche but would appear reasonable to the layman. NC is desperate to avoid being on the wrong side of a swing to the Conservatives. That is the only reason for this little charade. So lets not forget that to form a Conservative Government we need ta take a few Lib Dem seats. The Conservatives should not give the Lib Dems permission to pose as allies when in fact they are not and remain a left wing party.
