Hypocrisy watch

James Forsyth 2:45pm

There is something rather tragic about the spectacle of Mohammed al-Fayed sounding off in the High Court about the establishment’s supposed role in the death of Princess Diana. One doesn’t know whether to laugh or cry when one hears about statements like this from Fayed:

“Prince Philip rules the country behind the scenes. I think Prince Philip is the actual head of the Royal Family. He is a racist. He was brought up by his aunt who married one of Hitler's generals. This is the man who is in charge who is manipulating and can do anything.

"Time to send him back to Germany from where he comes. You want to know his original name – it ends in Frankenstein."

Ah well, at least he didn't accuse the Royal Family of being aliens in zip-up lizard suits.

Actually, Mo, his original name ends in "Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glucksburg". And if Philip really did run the country, do you think he'd make such a grotesque cock-up as Northern Rock? Not really Fayed's day for getting his facts straight.

I agree with James that Mr Fayed makes a very sad spectacle. It must be appalling to lose a son in such circumstances, and I suspect many people initially would have excused his outbursts as the spasms of a grief-stricken father. But the Diana industry has for too long sustained them, and very cruelly encouraged them. Unsurprisingly the British media are enjoying wallowing in it, and getting the chance to print scurrilous and vicious words about the Royal Family. I suspect many would happily accept them, but lack the guts to say such things themselves. I think that is the real hypocrisy. Add the cameos by contemptible oafs like Burrell and Michael Cole, and it all paints a very depressing portrait of the princess' life.

If the Duke of Edinburgh ran on a ticket of secret assassinations of family members, field sports and being rude about foreigners he would get my vote. Maybe he could stand for a Lib Dem seat at the next election.

i wouldn't mind if Prince Phil and Mo both went back where they came from.

This bloody inquest is costing us a fortune. It's a complete waste of time and money. When the verdict comes in (accidental death) Fayed will still be ranting on and a few Dianoids and conspiracy theorists will still believe him. How many sets of body armour could we have bought with the money we are squandering on this case? PS. I am a lawyer, not a soldier.

Trumpeter Lanfried, Calling a legal proceding a "complete waste of time and money" marks you out as quite an exceptional lawyer. Methinks your heart in not in the job ;-) As for Diana and Dodi, I recently saw a statue of them in the Holy Shrine at Harrods. I tried to buy a copy for the garden - to scare off the crows.

Libel lawyers are hovering over us all, so let me just point out that it was this government which abolished the death penalty for treason. It is however still an offence (Treason Act 1702, s.3) punishable by life imprisonment to endeavour to hinder succession to the throne.
